Badgers earn bronze in 800 free relay at Big Tens

Wisconsin wraps up day one of competition
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The 24th-ranked Wisconsin swim and dive program began the first day of the Big Ten Championship with a bronze medal finish in the 800 freestyle relay on Wednesday. The Badgers are tied for fourth place in the team standings after two events with 102 points. Indiana leads the meet with 118 points, two points ahead of second-place Ohio State. Michigan is third with 112 points.
At the start of the session, the Badger women placed sixth in the 200 medley relay in 1 minute, 38.09 seconds led by junior Phoebe Bacon with a 24.67 opening backstroke split. Freshman Hazal Ozkan completed the breaststroke leg in 27.55 seconds, followed by senior Mallory Jump taking on the fly leg in 23.59 seconds, and freshman Abby Wanezek taking the freestyle anchor in 22.28 seconds.
UW kept up the momentum with UW's first medal of the meet, placing third in the 800 free relay in 7:01.39. The team, which consisted of Bacon, junior Mackenzie McConagha, freshman Blair Stoneburg, and sophomore Abby Carlson, earned an NCAA "B" cut with a season-best time by over four seconds.
