Badgers begin Big Tens on a historic note

200 medley relay sets new school record
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The 23rd-ranked Wisconsin men's swimming and diving team began the first day of the Big Ten Conference Championship with fifth-place finishes in the 200 medley relay and 800 free relay on Wednesday. The Badgers are tied for fourth place in the team standings after two events with 100 points. Indiana and Ohio State lead the meet with 118 points, six points ahead of second-place Michigan.
At the start of the session, the Badgers placed fifth in the 200 medley relay, setting a new school record of 1 minute, 23.92 seconds led by senior Wes Jekel with a 21.22 opening backstroke split. Senior Will Myhre completed the breaststroke leg in 23.23 seconds, followed by senior Constantin Bensch completing the fly leg in 20.67 seconds, and redshirt-freshman Ben Wiegand anchoring with a 18.80 freestyle leg.
UW kept up the momentum with another fifth-place finish in the 800 free relay in 6:19.18. This time is now the second-all time for UW. The team, which consisted of junior Jake Newmark, junior Andrew Benson, freshman Dominik Mark Torok, and sophomore Yigit Aslan, earned an NCAA "B" cut with a season-best time by over two seconds.
