GENEVA, Ohio – After the first day of the Big Ten Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships, the Wisconsin women are in second place with 34 points, trailing team leader Indiana by just six points. Iowa is a distant third with 22 points.
The Badgers scored in all five events on Friday, including two medals in the weight throw.
Badgers battle in weight throwÂ
Junior Chloe Lindeman and redshirt senior Olivia Roberts both earned medals in the weight throw. Lindeman was the early leader in the event after she threw 75 feet, 8 inches in the second round. Minnesota's Shelby Frank took the lead in the third round, moving Lindeman to second place. Lindeman was not able to improve her performance, finishing with a silver medal. Roberts earned a bronze medal, throwing a personal best of 73-2 ¾. Redshirt freshman Abby Peeler also scored, taking sixth with a toss of 66-5 ¾.Â
Badgers score two in pentathlon
Senior Mackenzie Heyroth continued her successful season, finishing fourth in the pentathlon with a new personal best of 3,974 points. Freshman Shaina Zinter also scored in the pentathlon, scoring 3,748 points for seventh place.
Heyroth placed in the top 10 of all five pentathlon events. The Lodi, Wisconsin, native opened the day by setting a new personal best time in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing third in 8.60 seconds. She also set a n indoor personal best in the shot put, taking second with a throw of 39-7 ¾. Heyroth also ran a personal best in the 800 meters, finishing eighth in 2:18.36.
Zinter rallied late to score, winning the pentathlon 800 meters in a personal best time of 2:11.612.
Other Big Ten scorers
Three athletes finished in the top 10 of the 5,000 meters. Redshirt junior Shea Ruhly scored a fifth-place finish in 16:14.83. Alexa Westly and Samantha Stieve finished ninth and 10th, respectively, with times of 16:19.20 and 16:25.72.Â
Sophomore Julia Moore cleared 13-5 in the pole vault, clearing a new personal best to place eighth.Â
Graduate student Armoni Brown finished fifth in the women's long jump with a leap of 19-7, improving upon her 2022 finish by 15 places.
Wisconsin also placed seventh in the distance medley relay. The team of Lucinda Crouch, Maggie Munson, Victoria Heiligenthal, and Kylie Finger crossed in 11:25.89.
Finals Qualifiers
The Badgers have four athletes that advanced to Saturday's finals. Â
Junior Kiley Robbins qualified for Saturday's final in the 60-meter dash. Robbins finished third in her heat in 7.28, breaking her own school record of 7.29 set earlier this month.Â
In the 800 meters, Danielle Bellino qualified for her second Big Ten final. The graduate student finished third in her heat in 2:05.19, improving her personal best by more than half a second. Bellino currently sits fourth all-time at UW in the event.Â
Graduate student Madison Mooney will make a finals appearance in the mile. Mooney crossed in a personal best time of 4:43.51 and is seeded third going into the finals.
Senior Destiny Huven advanced to the finals of the 60-meter hurdles, running the fastest qualifyint time of 8.12.Â
