Badgers finish with two on podium at national tournament
TULSA - Wisconsin wrestlers Dean Hamiti and Trent Hillger placed in their respective weight classes on Saturday during Session Five of the 2023 NCAA Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Hillger, Wisconsin's top heavyweight starter at 285 pounds for the last five seasons, capped his Badgers career with an eighth-place finish at the national tournament. After suffering a leg injury on Friday during his prior match, the 2023 NCAA All-American and four-time career All-American stepped on the mat to officially injury forfeit to Arizona State's Cohlton Shultz, embracing his fellow big man in congratulations. Hillger finishes the season at 19-11 overall and finishes his time as a Badger with a 118-47 overall record in his time wearing the W. He qualified for the NCAA Championships five total times, earning All-American honors four times.
Hamiti, a sophomore and Wisconsin's top starter at 165 pounds for the past two seasons, finished sixth overall with two narrow losses on Saturday morning to two of the weight class's fellow top wrestlers. Hamiti lost a 9-7 decision to Princeton's Quincy Monday in the consolation semifinals and then dropped a tight 4-1 loss to Stanford's Shane Griffiths in the fifth-place match. Hamiti ends his season with a 25-6 overall record and his second consecutive NCAA All-America honor in as many years for the Badgers. His career record now stands at 53-10, of which an impressive 75.47 percent (40 of 53) of his victories are bonus-point wins.
