Five things to know: Men’s swimming heads to NCAA Championships

Badgers send eight to Minneapolis
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The No. 20 Wisconsin men's swimming team closes out championship season by sending eight swimmers to the NCAA Championships on Wednesday-Saturday at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center in Minneapolis. Two finals will be held on Wednesday, beginning a 6 p.m. Prelims begin at 10 a.m. daily with finals following at 6 p.m. The championships will be streamed on ESPN+.
Here are five things to know for this week.
1. RECORD-BREAKING BADGERS: The Badgers enter the last meet of the year with four school records this season. Junior Jake Newmark earned a school record in his Big Ten Championship race of the 200 free in 1 minute, 32.71 seconds. Senior Will Myhre continued the individual success by setting a school record in the 100 breast in just 51.84. Andrew Benson, Taiko Torepe-Ormsby, Ben Wiegand, and Cooper Scharff enter the championships with a school record in the 200 free relay, setting the mark at 1:16.79, while the team of Wes Jekel, Constantin Bensch, Myhre and Wiegand set the UW record in the 200 medley relay in 1:23.92.

B1G RETURN: The Badger men are coming off an impressive Big Ten Championships after crowning two individual champions and earning the highest team point score in a conference championship in program history. Newmark won two conference titles with a win in the 200 free as well as winning his second-straight title in the 500 free. Freshman Dominik Mark Torok picked up his first Big Ten title in the 400 IM.
3. SCORING BADGERS: Heading into the meet, the Badgers have several swimmers ranked as top-25 qualifiers. Newmark enters the 200 free as the sixth seed while he is also 17th in the 500 free, and seeded 17th in the 200 back. Myhre checks into the 100 breast as the 25th seed with his school record mark. Torok is seeded ninth in the 400 IM after earning the Big Ten title.
4. ELITE COMPANY: Wisconsin enters its final meet of the season as the 20th seed. The Badgers have maintained a top-25 placement throughout the entire season, after going 6-2 in dual meets. Three other Big Ten teams are ranked in the top 25 with Indiana in sixth, Ohio State in 10th, and Michigan in 16th.
