Offense Propels Badgers Past Spartans

UW won the game and the overall series against Michigan State

EAST LANSING, Wis. - The Wisconsin softball team came away with a big win over Michigan State on Sunday morning, claiming a 9-3 victory and series win over the Spartans.

Michigan State (10-14, 1-2) took the early lead in the second inning and extended their lead in the third on an RBI double to go up 2-0. The score remained until the Badger's (15-9, 2-1) big fifth inning, where the team put up a crooked number.

Molly Schlosser started the Wisconsin offense with a single to center field and advanced to second on a defensive error. Another fielding error on a Rylie Crane ground ball allowed Schlosser to score to get the Badgers within one. Katie Keller then made the Spartans pay by sending a two-run bomb over the left center field wall to hand Wisconsin the 3-2 advantage. Peyton Bannon ran for Kayla Konwent, added to the Badgers lead after two more Spartan miscues and put the Badgers up by two.

Michigan State tallied a run in the bottom of the fifth to get back within one run, however, Christaana Angelopolus got the Badgers out of the inning by throwing out a runner attempting to steal second base for the final out.

In the sixth, Schlosser once again started another Badger rally leading off with her second single of the day. Kate Linkletter utilized her speed the next at-bat with a sneak bunt single down the first base line, moving Schlosser to second. Both Schlosser and Linkletter advanced to second and third on a wild pitch and Rylie Crane then hit Schlosser in with an RBI-single to shortstop. Katie Keller brought in another run on a sacrifice fly to center field and the Badgers claimed a 6-3 advantage.

UW continued to pour in the runs with four doubles between Kayla Konwent, Brooke Kuffel, Christaana Angelopolus, and Ellie Hubbard, scoring three more runs to seal the deal for the Badgers as the Spartans were unable to respond, and Wisconsin won 9-3.

Gabi Salo started in the circle for the Badgers and struck out two while giving up two runs in the three innings she pitched. Maddie Schwartz (5-6) earned the win, came in and threw two strikeouts in four innings of action she saw while only giving up one run and one hit.
