
Five events to watch: Badgers compete at NCAA Indoor Championships

Wisconsin sends 11 athletes to Albuquerque this weekend

Here are five events to watch this weekend.
1. THROWING DOWN WITH THE BADGERS: Women's shot put school record holder Josie Schaefer is competing in her fifth NCAA championship after placing second at the Big Ten Championships two weekends ago. Schaefer goes into the event ranked fourth, beating her own school record with a personal best distance of 61 feet, 0 ¼ inches. The shot put begins at 5 p.m. CT Saturday.
Two Badger women are competing in the weight throw -- Chloe Lindeman and Olivia Roberts -- after finishing second and third, respectively, at the Big Ten Championships. Lindeman heads into the weekend ranked fifth in the nation with a personal best of 78-0 while Roberts is ranked 13th with a throw of 73-2 ¾. The weight throw begins at 5 p.m. CT Friday.
Grad student Sam Coil makes his first NCAA appearance this weekend in the weight throw. Coil threw a personal best of 73-9 ½ this season, landing him second all-time at UW and fifth in the nation. Coil, who will compete at 8 p.m. CT on Friday, is coming off a Big Ten title.
2. HURDLING HUVEN: Senior Destiny Huven is competing in the 60-meter hurdles after placing sixth at the Big Ten championships. She is currently ranked ninth in the event with a school-record time of 8.07 seconds set on the same track as the NCAA Championships earlier this season. Hurdle semifinals are Friday at 5:55 p.m. CT with finals are Saturday at 5:40 p.m. CT.
3. RECORD-SETTING QUARTET: The quartet of Adam Spencer, Colin Enz, Jackson Sharp, and Abdullahi Hassan are set to compete in the DMR this weekend. These four athletes not only set a new school record at UW but also set a new Big Ten Conference record, running a time of 9:19.99. Their performance ties for the fifth-best performance on the all-time world list and ties for third in the nation this season. The final of the DMR is Friday at 9:45 p.m. CT.
4. GOING THE DISTANCE: Australian natives Spencer and Sharp are also competing in the mile and 3000 meters, respectively. Spencer won gold in the mile at the Big Ten championships while his best time of 3:55.61 ranks 13th nationally this season. The semifinals of the mile are Friday at 8 p.m. CT while the final is Saturday at 8 p.m. CT.
Sharp, the reigning Big Ten champion in the 3,000 meters and 5,000 meters, ranks 14th nationally with a personal best time of 7:44.10. The final of the 3,000 meters in Saturday at 9 p.m. CT.
5. SIX-SECOND RACE: Junior Lawrence Johnson broke the 16-year old school record, running a time of 6.54 in the 60 meters this season. Johnson won his first Big Ten championship in the event this season and ranks fifth nationally. The semifinals begin at 8:15 p.m. CT on Friday with the finals on Saturday at 8:10 p.m. CT.
