Badgers Come Up Short Against Nebraska

Wisconsin lose to the Cornhuskers in game one of the series

LINCOLN, Neb. - The University of Wisconsin Softball team hit the road to face the Nebraska softball team and took a tough loss in 10 innings to the Big Ten opponent with a final score of 7-6.

In the first inning, Nebraska's (31-15, 11-4) Billie Andrews hit a deep fly ball to the wall in the Husker's first at-bat of the inning, but thanks to the strong wind, the ball was kept inside the park for a standup double for the home team. Nebraska was able to score as Andrews was brought in on an infield single to give the Huskers the 1-0 lead.

Badgers (22-15, 7-6) Molly Schlosser carried her hot streak into the Nebraska series sending the first pitch she faced to the wall for a stand-up double. The sophomore advanced to third but was stranded just one base away from the plate.

In the second inning, thanks to three hits, an error and a Badger wild pitch, the Cornhuskers extended their lead, 4-0.

However, Wisconsin continued to attack, and Skylar Sirdashney got the Badgers going with a double down the left-field line in response. Katie Keller brought Sirdashney in on an RBI single to give Wisconsin its first run. Molly Schlosser came up and continued to be a threat to every pitcher as the Wisconsin native sent an RBI single up the middle to score Keller. With the three hits and two runs, the Badgers were back in the game with a score of 4-2 in the third inning.

Peyton Bannon and the Badgers used the momentum going Wisconsin's way as the outfielder ripped a double just inside the left field line to put herself in scoring position in the top of the fourth. Katie Keller capitalized and singled to the right field once again to plate Bannon and get the Badgers within one. Kayla Konwent then did the same and lined a single to the left with bases loaded, bringing in Sirdashney. Molly Schlosser was patient in her third at-bat, drawing a walk, just as Sirdashney had earlier in the inning, to score Rylie Crane, who had reached on a fielder's choice. The Badgers took the lead 5-4 in the top of the fourth for the first time in the game.

In the bottom of the sixth, however, the Nebraska evened the score at five a piece, thanks to another Badger error.

Ellie Hubbard singled in the top of the seventh and advanced to second on a Peyton Bannon walk, but no Badger batter could bring the runners in. Wisconsin totaled 14 runners left on on base for the game. Fortunately, neither could the Nebraska offense and the game went into extra innings tied 5-5.

In the top of the eighth, Rylie Crane propelled the late game rally with a single to right field. Although Crane was out the next play on a fielders choice, the Badgers loaded the bases following a couple of walks and a hit by pitch. Christaana Angelopulos was patient in her at bat despite temptation to chase one with bases loaded and drew a walk to score Keller who had reached earlier in the inning, and once again, lead by one going into the bottom of the inning.

On a single turned into three bases due to another Badger error and a Badger passed ball, Nebraska scored unearned to once again even the score and prolong the game.

The game had reached a little over three hours and fifteen minutes by the bottom of the 10th as both the Huskers and the Badgers were unable to find an answer until the bottom half of the inning as Nebraska hit an RBI single to bring in the winning run and end the game with a score of 7-6.

All seven runs were unearned due to Badger fielding woes.

"Batting Cleanup"

  • Molly Schlosser stays hot going 2-4 and adding her 21st RBI of the season
