Schwartz Throws No-Hitter in Win over Purdue

The senior pitcher didn't allow a single hit against Boilermakers

MADISON, Wis. - For just the eleventh time in program history, Wisconsin softball's Maddie Schwartz threw a complete game, no-hitter and helped lead the Badgers to a 7-0 victory in the series fist game against the Purdue Boilermakers.

The first three innings were a battle on the defensive end as both teams teams remained hitless. Wisconsin's (18-10, 5-12) Brooke Kuffel reached in the first inning on an error on the Boilermakers (17-20, 2-7) defense, but the Badgers were unable to add another runner until the fourth inning when Katie Keller got the game's first hit.

Wisconsin strung together a series of hits to give the Badgers the lead when it mattered most. To start the fifth inning, Rylie Crane reached on another error by Purdue's shortstop and then Peyton Bannon ripped one to the wall for a double in her second at-bat. With two runners on, Christaana Angelopolus smacked a 2-RBI single to third to score both Crane and Bannon. Molly Schlosser then hit a rope over the left fielder's head, resulting in a triple scoring Angelopulous and Skylar Sirdashney, who walked the previous at-bat. Katie Keller then came up clutch with a sacrifice fly to left to bring in Schlosser to bring the score 4-0 in favor of the Badgers.

In the seventh, Wisconsin kept the pedal to the metal as Katie Keller reached on a single of her own before Kayla Konwent sent her eighth home run out of the park to score both of them and extend the Badgers lead, 7-0.

Maddie Schwartz had a perfect game through 5.2 innings, not allowing a single runner on base until Purdue earned a two-out walk in the bottom of the sixth. In the complete game, Schwartz threw 61 pitches and did not give up a single hit in all seven innings while striking out three batters. This is the eleventh no-hitter in all of Wisconsin softball program history and the first since Kaitlyn Menz completed the feat on March 22, 2017 against Louisville.

"Batting Cleanup"
  • Peyton Bannon, Kayla Konwent and Katie Keller each recorded two hits in the game
  • It took Schwartz just 61 pitches in her first career complete game, no hitter.
  • The Badger improve to a perfect 7-0 when scoring six or more runs in a game.

Up Next: The Wisconsin Badgers will play the second game of the Purdue series tomorrow, April 8, at 1:00 p.m. CT
