BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- After two days, the 15th-ranked Wisconsin men's track and field team is in third place in the team standings at the Big Ten Conference Outdoor Championship. After nine events, Nebraska leads the team race with 84 points while Minnesota is in second place with 46 points. The Badgers have scored 40 points.
Saturday scorers
Wisconsin scored two places in each of three events in Saturday's finals.
Redshirt junior
Jason Swarens broke the school record in the shot put for the second time this season. The Terre Haute, Indiana, native finished third with a toss of 67 feet, 4 3/4 inches. Redshirt junior
Andrew Stone also scored in the shot put, taking seventh with a throw of 63-10 1/2.
Freshman
Logan Measner continued his phenomenal rookie season, finishing second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. In only his second collegiate steeplechase, Measner was part of a group of three runners that broke away from the rest of the pack. With less than 800 meters to go, Measner moved into second and crossed the line in 8 minutes, 46.50 seconds. Transfer
Ben Nibbelink turned it up late in the race to finish fourth in 8:54.78.
The Badgers also scored two places in the decathlon. Senior
Cade Amborn finished sixth with 7,304 points while redshirt junior
Quinn Lansill took seventh with a personal best of 7,204 points.
Amborn picked up three fourth-place finishes in the second day of events. He took fourth in the 110-meter high hurdles (14.84), discus (131-0) and javelin (174-10).
Lansill recorded personal bests in four events on Saturday to go along with PRs in five events on Friday. The Brooklyn, New York, native won the 1,500 meters in a personal best time of 4:34.60. He also recorded personal bests in the discus (123-4), pole vault (13-1 1/2), and javelin (161-4).
Finals qualifiers
On Saturday, the Badgers also qualified two athletes to Sunday's finals.
Leading the way was sophomore
Adam Spencer, who won his heat of the 800 meters in a personal best time of 1:47.74. His time is also the eighth fastest in UW history.
Senior
Lawrence Johnson qualified for the final of the 100 meters, running the eighth-fastest qualifying time of 10.39. Redshirt junior
Sam Amusan placed 15th in the dash in 10.61.
Two freshman had impressive showings in their first Big Ten outdoor championship.
Giovanni Wearing ran a personal best of 14.02 in the 110-meter high hurdle trials to finish 11th. His time ties for eighth on the UW performance list. Fellow freshman
Jalen Williams took 12th in the 400-meter trials, crossing in 47.52, just .04 seconds off his personal best.
