The Badgers sweep the Iowa Hawkeyes on senior day

Wisconsin concludes regular season with a win

MADISON, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin softball team celebrated the seniors and the series sweep today with a 3-1 victory at Goodman.

Kayla Konwent had a storybook first at-bat in her final regular season game as a Badger. The super senior smacked a shot over the wall for her 10th home run of the season and 43rd of her career.

Wisconsin (27-19, 12-10) held on to the 1-0 lead until the third inning when Iowa hit three singles to bring in one run, the first of the series for the Hawkeyes (30-26, 10-13). However, the KK duo stayed hot and produced once again as Katie Keller ripped the ball to right field for a double, her fourteenth of the season before Konwent singled to bring in Keller and the second Badger run.

It wasn't until the fifth inning when the Badgers looked to add onto their one lead thanks to a fielder's choice and a couple Badger walks. With runners in scoring position, Bree Mitchell and Brooke Kuffel, Peyton Bannon attempted to squeeze bunt Mitchell in, but the Hawkeyes denied the run with a one-two putout. After a Molly Schlosser walk, bases were loaded for the Badgres, but once again the Hawkeyes got out of the jam after a soft line out by pinch hitter Emily Bojan, leaving Wisconsin scoreless in the inning.

Wisconsin gained the run back, though, in the sixth inning when the team loaded the bases once again. Skylar Sirdashney started things with a blooper over the third base before Katie Keller doubled once again. The Hawkeyes did not want to risk the hot hitter, Kayla Konwent, sending another home run out of the park and intentionally walked her to load the bases. Ellie Hubbard delivered to give the Badgers a needed insurance run with a single to right field.

Senior Maddie Schwartz (11-12) put up a one-two-three top of the seventh to end the game and secure the series sweep on senior day.

"Batting Cleanup"

  • Katie Keller is now four doubles away from first place all-time with 87 career two-baggers.

  • Kayla Konwent and Katie Keller amassed four of the six Badger hits on day as each of the two seniors had two hits each.

Up Next: The Wisconsin sweep was absolutely needed before heading into the Big Ten Tournament this upcoming week, starting this upcoming Wednesday, May 10th, and will conclude Sunday, May 13.
