Two former Badgers earn medals at USATF Outdoor Championships

EUGENE, Ore. – Former Wisconsin track and field standouts Alicia Monson and Zach Ziemek combined to earn three silver medals to highligh action for the Badgers at the 2023 USAT Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. 

Monson wins silver on day one 

Alicia Monson was the national runner-up in the 10,000 meters on the first day of competition in Oregon. A native of Amery, Wisconsin, Monson crossed in 32 minutes and 17.51 seconds to automatically earn a spot on Team USA for the 2023 World Athletics Championships. A five time All-American at Wisconsin, Monson earned a spot on Team USA for the third-straight year. 

Badger alum Benjamin Eidenschink raced in the men's 10,000 meters on Thursday as he finished 10th finishing in 28:59.36. 

Coming off of a 22nd-place finish in the 100 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Lawrence Johnson finished 26 in the event crossing in 10.30. 

Ziemek takes silver in the decathlon

2016 NCAA heptathlon champion Zach Ziemek completed the decathlon, earning 8,508 points to place second. "Double Z" was in third place in the decathlon after day 1 with a score of 4370 points after posting the competitions best long jump mark (24-7 3/4) the second-best shot put mark (51-7) and the third-best mark in the high jump (6-8 3/4). His momentum from day one carried over into Friday, winning the discus throw with a toss of 161-6. The pole vault was the third event of the day, where the former Badger cleared 17-4 ½ taking home first in the event. Ziemek went on to take third with a park of 201-0 in the Javelin throw. During the course of the competition, Ziemek went on to place in the top-three six times. Ziemek will now represent the U.S. in the decathlon at the 2023 World Athletics Championships after finishing third in the decathlon at the 2022 event. 

Brenna Detra raced in the 800-meters over the weekend, placing 11th in the semi-finals with a time of 2:01.69. 

Star hurdler Destiny Huven competed in the 100-meter hurdles, crossing in 13.27 earning herself an 18th-place finish. 

In the U-2020 competition, freshman Giovanni Wearing wrapped up a strong rookie campaign with a fifth-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles, his time of 13.53 was a PR and ranks fourth in school history. It's also the fastest time clocked by a UW hurdler since the 2001 season. 

Saturday's competition 

Former Badger Bianca Stubler qualified for the semifinals of the 400-meter hurdles following her 57.97 performance on Friday. Stubler later took 10th in the semi-finals finishing in 56.58. 
 

Coming off a stellar outdoor season, Badger Josie Schaefer wrapped up her Badger career in the shot put on Saturday night. The outdoor school record holder in the shot put (62-3 1/4) and 2021 NCAA runner-up in the event, Schaefer finished 14th with a distance of 53-11. 

Twice as nice

On the final day of the meet, Monson was back competing in the 5,000 meters Sunday night, the former distance star for the Badgers won her second medal of the weekend. Monson picked up her second silver medal, crossing the line in 14:55.10. 

Olin Hacker, the 2022 NCAA champion in the outdoor 5,000 meters, placed seventh in the 5,000 meters in 13:28.16.

Jason Swarens returned to competing in the shot put following the NCAA Championships in June, the redshirt junior wrapped up competition for UW with a mark of  63-0 ¾.  He will represent the U.S. later this month at the 2023 North America, Central America and Caribbean Under-23 Championships in San Jose, Costa Rica.
