MADISON, Wis. – For the first time since 2018, the Wisconsin men's soccer team plays host to a top-2 team in the country when No. 2 Kentucky visits McClimon Soccer Complex this Friday at 7 p.m. for Military Appreciation Night. Both teams opened their seasons with 2-0 records last week.
Here's how the matchup is shaping up.
1 – Big Badger Beginnings – Wisconsin began their season 2-0 after beating both Purdue Fort Wayne and Drake. The last time the Badgers won their first two matches of their season was back in 2011, a team that went on to finish tied for second in the Big Ten. Through its first two games, Wisconsin also sports the second best shot differential of any Big Ten team thus far.
2 – Nate the Great! – Junior keeper Nate Crockford has made a tremendous impact for the Badgers. Following up a great sophomore season for the UCLA Bruins, Crockford has started off his Badger career with seven consecutive saves and two clean sheets. He was honored for his efforts by Top Drawer Soccer, making their national men's team of the week.
3 – To the Max! – Returning midfielder Maxwell Keenan proved as one of the main cogs in the Badger offense last week. He had a hand in all three goals that Wisconsin scored, nabbing an assist the very first game of the season, as well as scoring the winner and assisting on the second goals last Sunday against Drake. Keenan's four points through two games is tied for first among Big Ten players.
4 – Wild, Wild, Wildcats – Wisconsin will take on their toughest challenge yet in the form of the second-ranked Kentucky Wildcats. Kentucky finished the 2022 season 15-1-3, making the second round of the NCAA tournament. They haven't slowed down this season, winning their first two games, while scoring four goals and shutting out both of their opponents.
Former Badger Ignasi Marques is in his first year at Kentucky after transferring to the Wildcasts as a grad transfer
5 – Military Appreciation Night – Friday at McClimon will serve at Military Appreciation Night. This game will see the ROTC presenting the flag during the national anthem ceremony prior to the game. All student military and veterans organizations are welcome! As always, admission is free.
