KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Wisconsin women's soccer team faced Western Michigan on Sunday, beating the Broncos 2-1. The Badgers extend their record to 3-1-2 through the first six games of the season.
How it happened
It did not take the Badgers long to get on the score sheet against Western Michigan, scoring in the 11' minute. The goal was much in part due to the hustle from
Aryssa Mahrt, who won the ball back in Wisconsin's defensive half and proceeded to dribble 40 yards up field. Once she drew in the WMU center back, she dumped the ball off to
Maia Richters who was running in from the flank. Richters very calmly drilled the ball into the back of the net to give the Badgers the lead. The team maintained the upper hand going into the half.
It took the Badgers only 17 minutes into the second half to double up. Richters played a dangerous ball into the box, which after a deflection fell to
Ashley Martinez. The junior did not hesitate and struck the ball into the goal for the second Wisconsin goal.
It was the first goal of the season for both Richters and Martinez, who helped propel the Badgers past the Broncos.
The Badgers prevented a late comeback from Western Michigan, who managed to get a goal back in the 81' minute. However, it was too little, to late for the Broncos as the Badgers held strong to close out the match.
