No. 3 Badgers trample Tommies, 7-0

Wozniewicz records hat trick in home shutout

MADISON, Wis. – Thanks to a stellar performance across the board, the No. 3 Wisconsin women's hockey team took down St. Thomas, 7-0, on Saturday night at LaBahn Arena.

Sarah Wozniewicz recorded her first career hat trick while Cassie Hall tallied a pair goals for the Badgers (17-4-0, 11-4-0-0-1-0 WCHA), leading UW to its 10th-straight win over the Tommies (7-15-0, 1-14-0-0-0-0 WCHA).

The Badgers dominated the Tommies in the first period thanks to a pair of goals from both Hall and Wozniewicz.

Hall lit the lamp for the Badgers just 3:25 into the contest before Wozniewicz tallied back-to-back goals. A power-play goal from
Hall completed the scoring for UW in the opening frame, giving the Cardinal and White a 4-0 edge over St. Thomas.

Maddi Wheeler joined in on the fun, giving the Badgers a five-goal lead early in the second period after going top shelf.

Early in the third, Laila Edwards battled through a pack of Tommies to tally her eighth goal of the season.

Earning her first career hat trick in exciting fashion, Wozniewicz found the back of the net shorthanded with 1:16 remaining to cap off the Badger scoring.

Jane Gervais stopped 10 of the shots she faced for her fifth shutout and ninth win of the season.

Three Notes of the Game
-Cassie Hall has six points in her last three games after a four-point weekend against Merrimack last weekend.
-The Badgers outshot the Tommies 51-10, including a 19-3 differential in the first period.
- Sarah Wozniewicz grabbed her first career hat trick against the Tommies on Saturday and became the fourth different Badger to post a hat trick of the season.

Head Coach Mark Johnson
On another strong showing:

"It was a good game, building off of what we did last weekend. That's three games we've played well and hopefully we come back tomorrow with the same mentality. You come out and you establish something in the first five to 10 minutes and it's so important, you put the other team on their heels. We did that tonight like we did the second game against Merrimack and it's just hard to play when you're up against that."

On Sarah Wozniewicz setting examples:
"She had two really strong games last weekend and I think any time someone scores a goal and has back-to-back good games, you come back to practice the next week and you're feeling good about yourself. She came out strong. We talked about being first on pucks and she set the example for everybody. I think you saw the bench when she scored a shorthanded goal for the hat trick and everybody is excited for her."

Junior Sarah Wozniewicz
On completing the hat trick while staying consistent:

"You always want the hat trick, but I was just trying to play consistent throughout the whole game. That's been my goal the whole year, to play a consistent 60 minutes and luckily (Maddi) Wheeler made a great pass to me there in the third and I got it then."

Freshman Cassie Hall
On adjusting to changes in the lineup:

"It was an adjustment but we adjusted well. We kind of just did the same thing and Wheeler took that responsibility really well, so it worked out for us."

Up Next: The Badgers wrap up their series with the Tommies at 2 p.m. on Sunday. The game is sold out but fans can listen to it on 1070 The Game or watch on Big Ten Plus.
