A win for over the Wolverines sends the Badgers to Chicago for the Big Ten Tournament
MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Badgers men's soccer team (7-5-2, 2-5-2 Big Ten) will face the University of Michigan Wolverines (7-3-5, 2-3-4 Big Ten) Sunday in Madison with a berth for the 2024 Big Ten Men's Soccer Tournament on the line.
Here are five things to know about the game.
1 – B1G STAKES — Wisconsin currently sits eighth in the Big Ten standings with eight points, two points behind Michigan and holding the tie-breaker over Penn State who also has eight points. A win over the Wolverines would set Wisconsin at seventh in the final Big Ten standings, punching their ticket into the Big Ten tournament in Chicago.
2 – COOL QUINTOS — Ryan Quintos extended the Badgers lead to two in the Badgers 2-0 victory this weekend with a nice header on a corner kick set piece. For that goal and helping the Badgers to yet another shutout, the sophomore received the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week award. That's his first defensive player of the week award of the season. It also marks the first time the Badgers won the award since Nate Crockford did in October of 2023.
3 – HEY THERE HEBERT — Matisse Hebert notched his sixth clean sheet of the season in Saturday's 2-0 victory of the season. Hebert's seven wins are the most for a Badger goalkeeper in a season since Dean Cowdroy had 10 in 2018. The freshman leads Big Ten goalkeepers with 1.04 goals against average –in terms of goalkeepers with at least eight games played. The Canadian native is tied for first with six clean sheets in the Big Ten.
4 – FRESHMEN IMPRESS — The Wisconsin freshman class has impressed all season long and Mathew Zachemski was the latest to be recognized as Big Ten Freshman of the Week. Zachemski recorded an assist on both goals in the Badger's victory on Saturday. He's the second Badger to receive the award after Dean Boltz was honored at the start of September. Boltz, Zachemski, as well as Hebert and Julian Kuhr were also listed among the top-100 freshman in the country by Top Drawer Soccer, with Boltz taking the top spot.
5 – UM and UW — The Badgers have not lost to the Wolverines at home since an OT 2-1 defeat in 2014. Wisconsin is 4-4-2 in their last 10 matchups against Michigan. The teams last met in Ann Arbor last season where the game ended in a 1-1 tie. Thomas Raimbault recorded the Badger goal in that game with Birgir Baldvinsson notching an assist. The Badgers defeated the Wolverines in 2022 2-1 at home.
EXTRA TIME — Kickoff is at 1 p.m. Sunday at the McClimon Soccer Complex. It is Senior Day as the team will be recognizing the contributions all of their seniors. The game will stream on BIG+. Live updates will also be given on @BadgerMSoccer on X, as well as @badgermsoccer on Instagram. Should they qualify, the Badgers will travel on Chicago on Nov. 7 for the Big Ten Tournament.
