No. 2 Badgers blank Beavers, 7-0

Wisconsin completes season sweep of Bemidji State

BEMIDJI, Minn. – Six different Badgers scored as the No. 2 Wisconsin women's hockey team picked up its 13th win in a row with a 7-0 victory against Bemidji State on Saturday afternoon at the Sanford Center.

Casey O'Brien posted a pair of goals, while Kelly Gorbatenko, Marianne Picard, Kirsten Simms, Cassie Hall and Maddi Wheeler each also found the back of the net as the Badgers (26-4-0, 20-4-0 WCHA) completed the season sweep of the Beavers (4-24-2, 3-19-1 WCHA).

After sending it in from nearly center ice, Gorbatenko got the Badgers on the board halfway through the first period.

With just 20 seconds left in the first slate, O'Brien tipped one in for her 50th point of the season.

O'Brien potted UW's lone goal in the second period, capitalizing on a power-play opportunity that gave UW a 3-0 lead after 40 minutes.

Picard found the back of the net to extend the lead to 4-0, before Simms lit the lamp for the fourth time this weekend.

Tipping in a shot from Chayla Edwards, Hall gave Wisconsin its sixth goal of the game and  Wheeler wrapped up the scoring with a power-play goal as only 14 seconds remained in the game.

Ava McNaughton stopped all 12 of the shots she faced for her 13th win and third shutout of the season.

Three Notes of the Game
- It marked the second time in her career that O'Brien has recorded 50 points in a season after recording a career-best 55 points during the 2021-22 season.
- Saturday's win marked the 19th time this season that the Badgers have tallied five or more goals in a game.
- Thanks to a sweep over the Beavers, the Badgers have now won 13 games in a row, surpassing the 12-game winning streak that started off the season.

Straight from the Rink
Senior Casey O'Brien
On the successful weekend in Bemidji:

"I thought we did a really good job yesterday, just coming out fast and playing our game. Today it took us a little longer to get started, but I think that bounce from Kelly (Gorbatenko) really helped us. We just stuck to our game and were lucky to put a few more in later on."

On all of the lines producing offensively:
"It's huge. I think when we get into the playoffs and later games like Minnesota and Ohio coming up, it's important to be producing from all three lines. We kind of have this next man up mentality and when one person or one line isn't scoring, it's up to the next one, and we've done a really good job at that.

Sophomore Kirsten Simms:
On the upcoming home series:

"Our team has been waiting for these last two weekends coming up, especially getting to be in front of our home crowd. It'll be huge, it'll get our adrenaline going and we're definitely ready to go."

On how the team performed in the sweep:
"I think we stuck to our game from start to finish. Even though we had a lot of offensive opportunities, I think we kept good habits throughout the 60 minutes of both games."

Up Next: The Badgers wrap up the WCHA regular season with a pair of home series against top-five foes. UW will face No. 5 Minnesota on Feb. 16-17 at LaBahn Arena before welcoming No. 1 Ohio State to LaBahn Feb. 23-24. All four games are sold out.
