Wisconsin visits Marietta to start out campaign
MARIETTA, Ohio -- The Wisconsin men's rowing team kicks off its spring racing season this Saturday at Marietta College.
Â
1. AT THE HELM: Olympic champion, National Rowing and UW Athletics Hall of Famer and 12-year UW men's assistant rowing coach Beau Hoopman took over the Wisconsin men's rowing program in the summer of 2023 as just the program's fourth head coach since 1946. He is set to begin his first spring competition as head coach, with assistant coach and two-time Badger All-American Adam Wehking in his second season on the coaching staff.
"We got on the water a lot earlier than normal, so we have had quite a bit of bonus rowing before spring break," said Hoopman. "This is the earliest ice out I can remember in my 24 years around UW rowing. Either way, it doesn't make a huge difference if we're on land or the water since we'd be otherwise making gains on the erg, which these guys need. Every little bit helps though, and they do need water time as well. Typically this time of year, however, the water might be liquid, but doesn't necessarily cooperate wind-wise.
"We'll have our first test this weekend in Ohio and see where we are. It's always a good experience going out to visit Coach Myhr at Marietta and get in some good quality racing."
Â
2. LAST TIME OUT: Wisconsin had an impressive performance their last time out in Marietta. They sent five boats, including two eight-man boats and three four-man boats, and swept the competition.
2023 RESULTS
Varsity Eight:Â 1. Wisconsin 5:02.0, 2. Marietta 5:18.3
Second Varsity Eight:Â 1. Wisconsin 4:58.5, 2. Marietta 5:14.5
Third Varsity Four:Â 1. Wisconsin A 4:56.2, 2. Wisconsin C 5:07.9, 3. Wisconsin B 5:11.1, 4. Marietta 5:14.9
Marietta College is coached by former Badger rower and assistant coach Greg Myhr, who is in his fifth year directing the Pioneers. Myhr rowed at UW from 1988 through 1992 and served as an assistant coach from 1995-2003.
3. A LOOK AHEAD: Following Wisconsin's race against Marietta, the Badgers will compete in the Pac-12 Invitational on April 6 and 7. Following that they'll take part in the Lake Morey Invite on April 27 and 28.Â
Wisconsin's men and women will be competing in the iconic Windermere Cup on May 4t for the first time ever, competing against the University of Washington and the Italian National team. Wisconsin and Washington will face off as conference rivals starting next season when Washington makes the shift from the Pac-12 to the Big Ten.Â
"Washington and Wisconsin have a long history of competing against one another," said Washington men's head coach Michael Callahan. "In fact, this year's race will give us the opportunity for the Huskies and Badgers to once again compete for the 'W' trophy, as we have for many years.
Following the cup, the Badgers will compete in the Eastern Sprints on May 19t and the 2024 IRA National Championships May 31 through June 2.
4. OLYMPIC DREAMS: Two former Badgers are currently at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Selection Camp competing for a spot in the 2024 Paris Olympics. Both Jimmy Catalano and Michael Knippen are aiming for a spot on the men's eight national team or other crews. Four Wisconsin women alumni are also competing.
