Liking shines at Bryan Clay Invite
MADISON, Wis. – The UW men's track and field team competed in its busiest day of the season with four meets on Friday. Throwers took part in the Beach Invitational out in Long Beach, California, while distance and multi events competed at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, California. Sprints, hurdles and jumpers took on the field at the Cerritos Invitational and more distance runners ran the 5000 meters at the UW-Platteville Invitational.
Liking stars at Bryan Clay
Three-time Big Ten Cross Country Champion Bob Liking showed his prowess on the track on Friday at the Bryan Clay Invitational as the senior ran a personal-best of 13 minutes, 19.19 seconds in the 5000 meters to take fifth in the invitational section.
Liking, who competed unattached in the prestigious meet, is the top American this season in the outdoor 5000 meters and ranks in the top-10 in the world in the event.
Rowen Ellenberg also competed unattached in the third section of the men's 5000 meters and took second in 13:44.27 while Johnny Livingstone was 13th in the fourth invite section in 13:54.76.
The 800 meters saw two UW athletes finish in the top 20. Freshman Andrew Casey placed 18th after crossing the line in 1:48.24. Abdullahi Hassan made his return to the track after earning first-team All-American status during the 2024 indoor season. Hassan competed unattached at Friday's meet, finishing 13th in 1:47.96.
Quinn Lansill won the Group D decathlon with 7,059 points. The mark ranks third in the Big Ten Conference this season. After leading at the conclusion of Thursday's events, Lansill shut the door by winning the 110 meter hurdles (14.73) and the javelin throw (161-5).
Sprinters Pick Up Two Wins at Cerritos Invitational
Wisconsin earned a pair of wins at the Cerritos Invitational in Norwalk, California on Friday as Gio Wearing picked up his first win of the outdoor season thanks to a wind-aided time of 13.62. The Big Ten Champion in the 60 hurdles won his race on Friday by more than half a second.
Jalen Williams and Elliott Harris went 1-2 in the 400 meters as Williams crossed the line in 48.02 seconds and Harris was second in 48.76.
Throw down at Long Beach
Four throwers competed across two packed events at the Long Beach Invitational. Jason Swarens had the furthest Badger toss in the hammer throw, placing 24th with a distance of 196-6 (59.91m). Jacon Bugella wasn't far behind as he finished 26th with a mark of 195-7 (59.63m). Jacob Zednik appeared in his fourth javelin competition of the season, placing 25th with a throw of 193-11 (59.12m).
Top-Five Finishes at Platteville
An additional pair of Badgers competed in the 5000 meters at UW-Platteville. Sam Craig finished fifth in the event, crossing the line in 13:58.39. Freshman Liam Newhart, who competed unattached in the event, won the race thanks to a time 13:50.43, which is a top-10 time in the world for athletes under-20 in the outdoor 5K.
Up Next: The Bryan Clay Invitational, Beach Invitational and UW-Platteville Invitational all resume Saturday. The 1500 meters invite gets underway in Azusa at 9:20 p.m., while discus throwers gear up for the Beach Invitational.
