Wisconsin put out Flames in first spring match

MADISON, Wis. - The Wisconsin volleyball team returned to the Field House to kick off their first and only home spring season match against the UIC Flames. The Badgers defeated the Flames (25-28, 25-17, 25-13).

For the first time since December 2023, the Badgers took the court to plan another opponent. After shaking off a little rust, Wisconsin strung together a solid first set. Anna Smrek sparked the Badgers offense with a big kill for a 20-18 UW lead. The Badgers would go onto 6-0 scoring run to close out the first set 25-18.

During the second set, Wisconsin was on a roll offensively with having only one attacking error. By limiting the attack errors, Wisconsin amassed .609 (15-1-23) set two hitting percentage. In addition to the 15 kills, Sarah Franklin and Carter Booth each tallied a service ace.

In set three, the Badgers kept up the offensive pressure with five service aces. They finished off the last set on a 4-0 scoring run to finish off UIC, 25-13 and a 3-0 sweep.

Wisconsin hit .410 (83 - 40 - 6 ) while minimizing the Flames to -.014 (71 - 18 - 19 ) hitting percentage..

Carly Anderson made her Badger debut and immediately made an impact. Anderson proved to be effective in service with three service aces, establishing a tempo with 27 assists, and quick with four kills.

Offensively, Devyn Robinson hit .625 and Sarah Franklin hit .346. Both led the Badgers with 10 kills. Along with a strong offensive showing, Robinson led the way with 11 digs, garnering herself a double-double.

Defensively, Wisconsin shut the Flames out by out blocking them 10-0. Robinson led the way in blocks with seven, while Carter Booth totaled six.

STRAIGHT FROM THE COURT
Head Coach Kelly Sheffield

On the highlights of tonight's match: "We're certainly appreciative of everyone that showed up to watch a Friday night scrimmage in April. That's really cool. What was also cool was Devyn [Robinson] leading our team in digs and making a real significant run at trying to be the libero on our team. When you come and watch in the spring, or hopefully when you're watching our team, you're never quite sure what you're gonna get. Hopefully, in a good way, you come and see something that you haven't seen before. It's probably been a while since we've had a setter that has had four kills in a match, and it's probably been a long time since a right side has come in and had double-digit digs. Some cool things for people to write home about."

Junior Setter Carly Anderson
On playing her first match at Wisconsin: "I can barely put it into words. It was one of the best experiences of my volleyball career. I am filled with a lot of pride for this place, for where I've been, for these people and for myself."

UP NEXT:
Wisconsin goes on the road to the Stoltz Sports Center to play University of Northern Iowa. First serve is at 6:30 p.m. and tickets to the game are sold out.
