Sharp and Schaefer crack top-10 list in Badgers’ regular-season finale on Friday in Madison

MADISON, Wis. – The UW men's track and field team saw eight athletes win events at Friday's Badger Challenge, highlighted by a trio of All-American performers in Jason Swarens, Jackson Sharp and Adam Spencer.

In the mens' 3000 meters, Sharp ran the school's fourth-fastest time in the event, crossing the line in 7 minutes, 54.43 seconds. It marked this first race for the Cardinal and White since finishing third in the 5000 meters at the 2024 Australian Athletics Championships last month. Micah Wilson followed behind in second at 8:26.30.

Swarens got the day underway in the shot put, launching a throw of 65 feet, 9 ½ inches (20.05m) to win the event. His distance was the fifth furthest in the NCAA this season and best in the Big Ten.

Spencer led a group of Badgers in the 1500 meters, winning the event at 3:40.44. It was his first event on the track since winning the 2024 Australian Athletics Championships in the 1500 meters. Sharp, Ben Nibbelink, Pierce Seigne and Rowen Ellenberg, among others, all came in behind as the Badgers placed nine runners in the top 10.

Aside from Swarens, Jake Schaefer and Jacob Zednik both ascended the UW top 10 list in their respective events. Schaefer breaks onto the list tied for No. 6 in the discus throw. His winning mark of 186-0 (56.70m) was a personal best. Zednik rose to No. 4 on the list in the javelin throw. The New York native had a toss of 213-3 (65.00m) to win the event on his first throw of the competition. His distance is ninth in the Big Ten this season.

The Badgers claimed a pair of titles in the sprint events as Sam Amusan won the 100 meters in 10.60 and was part of UW's 4x100 relay squad that won in 40.27 that also featured Jalen Williams, Giovanni Wearing and Elliot Harris.

Swarens also took home the victory in the hammer throw with a season-best toss of 210-4 (64.11m). Jacob Bugella was second with a mark of 203-10 (62.12 meters).

Multi-event specialist Quinn Lansill won the high jump with a clearance of 6-4 1/4 (1.94m). He finished fourth in the long jump at 20-8 (6.30m), while Justin Kiefel placed second in the event with a distance of 22-7 (6.88m).

The Badgers went 2-3 in the pole vault as Hunter Cook soared 15-9 3/4 (4.82m) to place second and Timothy Chrisbaum cleared 15-1 3/4 (4.62m) to take third.

A pair of Badgers that were competing unattached were victorious on Friday as well. Abdullahi Hassan won the 800 meters in 1:46.93 while Nick Gilles claimed victory in the steeplechase, crossing the line in 8:58.56. It marked the first time that Gilles competed in the steeplechase event.
