Two of three Badger boats will race in Sunday grand finals
WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – The Wisconsin women's lightweight program opened its 2024 Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championships by sending its lightweight four to Sunday's grand final, while its lightweight eight raced for Sunday grand final lanes on Mercer Lake on Saturday.
UW's lightweight double sculls also raced, but fell just short of reaching Sunday's grand final.
In the lightweight eight, the rankings held exactly in the race for lanes with the Badgers rowing to sixth place in a time of 6:53.024. Princeton won the race in six minutes, 31 seconds and 174 thousandths of a second.
In the lightweight four, the Badgers placed third in their heat with a 7:31.441 over 2000 meters. Stanford won UW's heat in 7:21.827.
UW's lightweight double sculls raced to a 7:42.575, less than a second behind third-place Stanford and just shy of the grand final. In a heat with the top three advancing and all four crews within 2.6 seconds, Princeton grabbed the top spot in 7:40.069.

On the lightweight double's close call
"Our crews got a taste of the fastest racing in the country today. We had a very tough close finish in the double heat which was heartbreaking considering their time would've put them in second place in the other heat and therefore put them in the grand final, but that's the nature of racing. Sometimes you come up a little short. So the double will be revved up to post a fast time in the petite final to see where we would've fallen in the grands.
On the four and eight
"The four and eight had good races with both making the grand finals tomorrow and both boats having a good idea of what we want to adjust heading into that race. I'm very excited for us to make these adjustments and see what we can do tomorrow on the big stage. Go Badgers."
