Junior earns third-top-three finish at national championships

EUGENE, Ore. – Wisconsin men's track and field junior Adam Spencer claimed third in the 1500 meters while Jackson Sharp collected his seventh All-America honor to highlight action for the Badgers at the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday at Hayward Field.

Spencer claims third-straight top-three finish at NCAA's
In one of the most anticipated races of the national championships, Spencer took home a third-place showing, crossing the line in 3 minutes, 39.80 seconds.

Spencer positioned himself towards the front of the pack after the first 300 meters and remained in the top-five heading into the final lap.

The 2024 Australian National Champion put himself in the top four heading down the homestretch but Washington's Joe Waskom won in 3:39.48 while Oregon's Elliott Cook was second in 3:39.57.

"We tried a lot for a win at nationals but it was still a really good day," Spencer said. "It was a stacked field and to come away third is a good day but I would've loved a win."

It marks Spencer's sixth All-American honor and his second first-team nod of the season after finishing second in the mile at the NCAA indoor championships. The Melbourne, Australia, native also took home third in the 1500 meters at the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships as well.

Sharp caps off Badger career with top-10 finish.
In the penultimate event of the NCAA meet, Sharp took 10th in the 5000 meters, crossing the line in 14:01.48.

The senior worked his way from the back of the pack all the way to the front of the pack midway through the race before ultimately finishing 10th to collect second-team All-America honors.

For Sharp, it marks the end of a historic career for the Cardinal and White. The Australian collected seven All-America honors and won five Big Ten individual titles during his time in Madison. He ranks fourth in school history in the outdoor 5000 meters and is the school record holder in the indoor 5000 meters with a time of 13:25.51.

In the team standings, the Badgers finished 20th with 14 points, the second-best finish of a Big Ten team as Nebraska had 19 points to finish 13th. Florida won the team title with 41 points, barely beating SEC-rival Auburn who had 40.

Up Next: This weekend marks the end of the collegiate track and field season, but a plethora of Badgers are in action in the coming weeks. Next up for the Badgers is the U.S. Under-20 Championships next Wednesday and Thursday at Hayward Field in Eugene as Andrew Casey will compete in the men's 800 meters while Liam Newhart will race in the 5000 meters.
