CHARLESTON, S.C., -- The Wisconsin men's golf team sits in fifth at -5 after Monday's opening round of the Bryson Invitational at the Daniel Island Club.
Spencer Turtz finds himself in second overall, two strokes back of the leader. He posted a -4, bogey-free, 68 on the day. The Charlotte native attacked Par 4s all afternoon, going -2 for a 3.80 average, good for third-best in the field. Overall, the Badgers were the round's second-best on Par 4s, going -2 as a team.
True freshman
Vijay Kumar had a resilient day in his second-consecutive start, finishing 11th and a stroke behind Turtz at -3. He bogeyed the second hole of the day, then answered with a birdie to close the back-nine, before exploding for a bogey-free, -3, back-nine. He played the Par 3s well all day, having the field's third-lowest score at even.
Sophomore
William Harned kept things consistent, shooting even. He winds up in 30th and the Badger's third leading scorer. The Nashotah native fought off an early bogey with back-to-back birds on his 9th and 10th holes. He was one of the Badgers to excel on Par 4s, going -1 across the 10 holes.
Charles Erlandson and
Jacob Beckman split the scoring to close the UW lineup, both going +2 and tied for 46th. Erlandson, a sophomore, used two back-nine birdies to clear up an above-par start. Beckman followed a similar path, birdying his 9th and 10th holes and carrying that momentum into an even final stretch.
UW had one Badger competing indiviually on the day in South African
James Boustead. He sits in 81st at +9. The junior already has one top-10 finish on the season, dating back to the opening Gopher Invitational.
