UW drops to No. 3 Minnesota
MADISON, Wis — The No. 1 Wisconsin women's hockey team fell to No. 3 Minnesota, 5-1, in Friday's game one matchup at LaBahn arena.
UW grabbed the first lead of the game, before engaging in a defensive battle throughout the second period that ended 1-1. A tough third period allowed the Gophers to take the lead and drop the Badgers record to 10-1-0.
The Badgers kept strong possession of the puck during the first period. Junior forward Cassie Hall found the back of the net seven minutes into the game after receiving the puck from Lacey Eden and Caroline Harvey. This was Hall's 50th career goal and 11th goal in 11 games so far this season.
After trading shots in the second period, the Gophers finally evened up the score with one minute remaining in the second period.
The score became 2-1 after a Gopher goal nearly three minutes into the third period. Minnesota then added three more, taking a 5-1 lead that would last until the end of the game.
The Badgers outshot the Gophers 41-38 in the game.
Wisconsin's loss breaks a 23-game win streak for the Badgers going back to January of this year, and a 37-game unbeaten streak going back to November of 2024. Both streaks are program records.
Head Coach Mark Johnson
On lessons from the game:
"The response wasn't good from our end and so it's an opportunity to talk about some things and get people to understand a few more. And then you get challenged, you know, there's still a lot of hockey to be played."
