UW ties game with minute remaining, wins 4-3 in overtime
MADISON, Wis. — The No.1 Wisconsin women's hockey team battled No. 15 St. Thomas to a dramatic 4-3 win in overtime this Friday at LaBahn Arena. Cassie Hall played hero by scoring the game-winning goal in the extra period.
The Badgers trailed 3-2 in the final six minutes of regulation. With an extra attacker coming onto the ice, Kirsten Simms tipped in a Caroline Harvey shot to tie the game up with a minute and a half remaining.
Simms almost won the game soon after, seemingly beating the buzzer with a goal in the last second. A replay review deemed the goal too late, however, sending the game to overtime.
Two minutes into the three-on-three extra period, Cassie Hall swooped in to score off the rebound of a Simms shot, securing the comeback victory - the team's sixth win against a ranked opponent this season.
The Badgers entered the period with a 2-1 lead, but a couple of St. Thomas' shots snuck just past Ava McNaughton, giving the Tommies their short-lived lead.
Eight minutes later in the period, Laila Edwards found the puck from Kirsten Simms, stick handling her way past a defender, and scoring to take a 2-1 lead, setting up the theatrical third period that ultimately led to the Badgers 4-3 win.
Wisconsin outshot St. Thomas 51-17, finishing up its 2025 homestand with a 14-1-1 overall record.
Head Coach Mark Johnson
On the win:Â
"Found a way, pulled our goalie to tie it up and almost finished it off with zero seconds to go. Fun win in overtime and happy with the end result."
On Lacey Eden's performance this weekend:
"She was one of our better players over the six periods this weekend. It was effort-type plays for all of the periods. Last night's first goal was a difficult, effort play and obviously her shot when she scored in the second period. Tonight, effort type of play, when we're shorthanded, she takes it upon herself to make a play and gets an opportunity and buried it."
Senior Caroline Harvey
On the bounces of the puck:
"The bounces were definitely not going our way. Hitting maybe a helmet, going to the corner. So many people had so many chances right at the goal line that just didn't go in the back of the net. It was good that we buried one when we needed to at the end. Sometimes that'll happen, and that's adversity, but how you react to that and how you fix that in the moment matters."
On the big moments:
"It means a lot for the team, and just to be those players, to come up in the big moments and score those goals. KK and Kirsten are huge clutch players, they can score at anytime, anywhere. It's nice to be able to play alongside them, to be able to match that and come out on top for our team."
