Wisconsin’s fourth-quarter rally comes up short
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.- The Wisconsin women's basketball team (6-2, 0-0 B1G) fell 65–56 to Ole Miss (6-0, 0-0) on Friday afternoon at the Daytona Beach Classic, despite a strong second-half push.
Destiny Howell led the Badgers with 14 points on 5-for-7 shooting, including a season-high 4-for-5 from beyond the arc. Breauna Ware added 10 points on 4-for-6 shooting, while Kyrah Daniels and Ronnie Porter contributed 10 and 9 points, respectively.
How it happened
The Badgers shot just 40% from the field (10-25) in the first half and went 0-for-2 from the free-throw line, while Ole Miss controlled the pace defensively and limited Wisconsin to four made three-pointers. Kyrah Daniels scored six points early, and Destiny Howell and Breauna Ware combined for five in the first quarter to keep Wisconsin within striking distance. At halftime, the Badgers trailed 27–24.
Wisconsin returned from the break with renewed energy, shooting 50% (4-8) in the third quarter. Daniels and Ware attacked the basket, and Dorja Zaja contributed key minutes off the bench. Ole Miss countered with timely threes to maintain a narrow lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The team made their strongest push in the final period, shooting 62% from the field and 3-for-5 from beyond the arc. Howell hit her fourth three-pointer of the game, and Ronnie Porter added a late layup to pull Wisconsin within single digits. Despite the late surge, Ole Miss closed out the game at the free-throw line.
Wisconsin shot 44.7% (21-53) from the field, 44.4% (12-27) from three, and 58.3% (7-12) at the free-throw line. On the other end, Detroit Mercy finished at 39.6% (21-53) from the field, 19.0% (4-21) from deep, and 68.0% (17-25) at the line.
