UW scores most points in series history
MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin men's basketball team led wire-to-wire to rout Marquette 96-76 on Saturday at the Kohl Center.Â
John Blackwell dropped 30 points for the third-time this season, becoming one of two players in the country with that claim. The junior's game-high paced the Badgers (7-2, 1-0 B1G) to their largest point total against Marquette (5-5, 0-0 Big East) in the rivalry's history, and their widest margin of victory in the series since Dec. 5, 1952.Â
UW, who has been prolific behind the arc all season, blitzed the Golden Eagles with 14 three-pointers, the most in series history for the Badgers. Bucky finished 14-33 from deep (42.4%), their highest shooting clip all season.Â
The Badgers now hold a 72-60 advantage over Marquette, winning four of the last five matchups and the last four in Madison. UW has now won 17 straight games against non-conference opponents at home, dating back to a win over Robert Morris on Nov. 17, 2023 - it's the longest active streak in the Big Ten Conference.Â
After a back-and-forth opening five minutes, the Badgers broke the game open midway through the first half with an 11-2 run, capped by a Nolan Winter three-ball to force an MU timeout.Â
Bucky didn't look back from there, leading 43-31 into the break before dropping 53 second-half points to cement the 20-point victory.Â
Overall, five Badger starters finished in double-digits. Andrew Rohde had his best game as a Badger, posting 17 points on an efficient 6-for-9 shooting. Nick Boyd had 15 points on the day, adding a Badger career-high 5 rebounds and dishing out 4 assists.Â
Junior Nolan Winter notched his fifth double-double of the season, tallying 13 points and 13 rebounds. True freshman Aleksas Bieliauskas recorded his first career double-double in his second collegiate start, putting up 11 points, 10 boards and going 3-3 from deep.Â
From the Court
Head Coach Greg Gard
On the rivalry atmosphere
"It was a great college basketball atmosphere, and our team obviously responded to that atmosphere. Overall, I thought we played really well."
Junior John Blackwell
On the team's performance
"This was the most consistent 40-minutes we have played. They had a little bit of a scoring stretch, but we weathered that storm and came out with the victory. We did tighten up a few things from the past that we've been working on."
Senior Andrew Rohde
On meaning of the victory as a Wisconsin native
"It was amazing. This game has been circled on our schedule for a while. Any time we play a rival, it'll be a [good] game. Being out there, being able to experience it with this group, I wouldn't want to do it with anyone else... Growing up in this state, watching how intense this rivalry is, and this being my last year, I wanted to go out on top, so I'm glad we could do it. I definitely tried to bring a little energy [to the team] this week, letting them know that this is personal."
Up Next: The Badgers return to Big Ten play on Dec. 10 with a road trip to Nebraska. The Huskers (8-0, 0-0 B1G) face their own ins-state rival on Sunday with Creighton before taking on Bucky.Â
Wisconsin returns to Dairyland the following week for the Milwaukee Hoops Showdown, squaring off with Villanova on Dec. 19 at the Fiserv Forum. Tickets for the 7 p.m. game are available here.Â
