WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The No. 16 Wisconsin men's basketball team earned a 94-84 win over the No. 7 Purdue Boilermakers, the team's second top-ten ranked win of the season.Â
Wisconsin outscored Purdue 58-47 in the second half, elevating the team to a huge win, with both teams ranking in the top four in the conference standings.
John Tonje led the team with 32 points, going 10-for-15 from the field.
Max Klesmit scored 17 points and dished out six assists.
John Blackwell scored 11 points - all coming in the second half.
Nolan Winter and
Jack Janicki added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
After trailing at halftime, 37-36, the Badger offense clicked in the second frame. Tonje scored 13-of-16 Badger points early in the second half, guiding Wisconsin to a 11-0 run that put them over the top.Â
Wisconsin's top scorers took over from there, with Tonje, Blackwell, and Klesmit each scoring 10+ points in the second half. The trio combined to go 13-for-16 from the free throw in the second half, allowing for the Badgers to hold onto their lead.
UW answered any attempt at a Purdue comeback, taking the victory, 94-84.
The Badger's second half lead was aided by key plays from the bench.
Carter Gilmore slammed down a dunk on an inbound play, while
Jack Janicki knocked down two triples - earning a career-high 11 points.
Overall the bench scored 19 points and combined for three blocks on the defensive side.Â
The game got off to a physical start in the first half, with Purdue leading most of the way. Despite Purdue taking 10 more free throw attempts than Wisconsin, UW kept pace with the Boilermakers, trailing by just one point at intermission.
With six games remaining in the regular season schedule, Wisconsin's record moves to 20-5, with a 10-4 record in conference play.
Notable:
- In defeating No.7 Purdue, Wisconsin tallied its second top-10 win of the season (also knocked No. 9 Arizona on Nov. 15). The Badgers now have 14 top-10 wins in 10 seasons under Greg Gard, including seven of those coming away from home.
- Wisconsin tallied 94 points, its most points ever scored in a road win over an AP Top-25 team.
- The Badgers shot 61.5% from the field, the highest by a visiting team at Mackey Arena in at least 2004-05.
- Wisconsin's 61.5% shooting is its best mark in a road game since at least 1993-94.
- UW is the only Division I team to shoot 60% from the field and commit 3 or fewer turnovers in a road game since at least 2010-11.
- UW went 20-for-22 (90.9%) from 2-point range, the highest 2FG pct. by any Division I team in a road game since at least 2010-11.
- Saturday marked UW's fewest turnovers against a ranked team since posting 0 vs. No. 25 Iowa on 1/20/15.
- Including 41 points vs. #9 Arizona, Tonje is the nation's only player to post multiple 30-point games vs. top-10 opponents this season.
- Redshirt Freshman Jack Janicki posted a career-high 11 points in 17 minutes off the bench, going 3-for-4 from 3-point range. Including a previous career-high nine points vs. No. 9 Arizona (11/15), Janicki is averaging 10.0 ppg in two career games against top-10 opponents. He has averaged 1.3 ppg in the other 23 games this season.
