Badgers hold off Hoosiers for 6-5 victory

Blomberg's four-RBI lifts UW to 6-0 at home

MADISON, Wis. - The Wisconsin softball team (25-15, 7-7) took the first win of the series against Indiana, taking down the Hoosiers, 6-5.

Wisconsin took the lead early, and held-off any IU attempts at a comeback.

A Molly Schlosser double in the first inning set up two runners in scoring position, both of whom came in to score off a Hilary Blomberg single. Later on in the inning, pinch runner, Emma King, scored from third after Indiana attempted to catch Hannah Conger stealing second base. Wisconsin exited the inning up 3-0.

Indiana answered with a run in the top of the second, but the Badgers scored in the next frame with a hard-hit, RBI single up the middle from Kendra Lewis.

Starter Molly Jacobson held off Indiana from there, before the Hoosiers began to mount a comeback in the top of the sixth. IU knocked two doubles in the inning to cut the lead to 4-3, before Shelby Jacobson came in relief to get out of the inning.

Wisconsin had multiple chances to add insurance runs in the game, leaving the bases loaded in the second, and stranding runners at second and third in the fourth inning. The team finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth, however, when Blomberg came up to the plate with a runner on and smacked a two-run home run to make it 6-3.

Both runs ended up being vital, as Indiana's Brianna Copeland hit a two-run homer of her own in the top of the seventh. Despite the shakeup, Wisconsin managed to get out of the inning, and hang on for the 6-5 win.

Molly Jacobson earned the victory, moving up to 8-3 on the season. She went 5.2 innings, giving up three earned runs with no walks. Shelby Jacobson picked up her first career save, pitching the final 1.1 innings of the game.
