MADISON, Wis. - The Wisconsin softball team (31-18, 11-10) homered its way to an 8-2 victory over Northwestern this Saturday, to even the series.
The Badgers rebounded after a game one loss, and ended a 12-game losing streak to the Wildcats.
Seven of Wisconsin's eight runs came off home runs. The first of which came at the beginning of the game, with
Emmy Wells sending a three-run shot over the left-center wall - giving UW a quick 3-0 lead.
After trading a few scores, Wisconsin separated themselves in the top of the fourth. Leading 4-2, shortstop
Ellie Hubbard led off the inning by smacking a 2-0 pitch out of the park for her third home run in her last six games. The long balls didn't stop there, however, as freshman
Kendra Lewis punctuated the big inning with a two-out, three-run home run that made the score a decisive 8-2.
Wisconsin's powerful offense was backed up by a great performance from
Molly Jacobson in the circle. Jacobson went the full 7.0 innings, giving up just two runs, and striking out a season-high five batters. After giving up two runs in the first 3.0 innings of work, Jacobson tossed a shutout during the last 4.0 innings, striking out the final batter of the game.
After committing five errors in the previous game, Wisconsin's defense bounced back with an excellent showcase on the day. The team recorded no errors, and made a couple of highlight plays.
Hilary Blomberg made an athletic diving stop to throw a runner out in the bottom of the second, while
Emmy Wells nabbed a runner stealing second to get out of the bottom of the third.

Seven Wisconsin players recorded a hit on the day, with half of the team's eight total hits going for extra-bases. The Badgers did lots of damage when it mattered the most, going 7-for-13 with two outs.
