UW topples UMD, 28-13, moves to 9-1
MADISON, Wis - Wisconsin wrestling collected its first Big Ten victory this season, beating Maryland, 28–13 at the Field House this Sunday. The team bounced back after its first loss on Friday, and now has a 9-1 record.
While Maryland won four-of-ten bouts, UW came away with the lopsided win by holding all their losses to decisions. Conversely, Wisconsin recorded a major decision, three tech falls and a fall.
Wisconsin's first win came from the heavyweight matchup, when Braxton Amos conquered his foe with a pin, his team-best fourth of the season.
The Badgers continued to build their lead from there, with the team's stellar lightweight combo of Nicolar Rivera (125) and Zan Fugitt (133), who came away with a major decision and a tech fall, respectively.
UMD won two straight bouts from there, before UW rattled off three wins of their own thanks to Luke Mechler, Cody Goebel and Luke Condon. It was the first tech fall of the season for both Mechler and Condon.
The Badgers ultimately finished with a 28-13 victory, the team's largest margin of victory against a conference opponent beating Northwestern, 30-12 in February of 2024.
