UW powers past Tommies with multi-goal games from Eden and Hall
ST. PAUL, Minn. — The No. 1 Wisconsin women's hockey team swept St. Thomas at the Lee & Penny Anderson Arena in St. Paul, defeating the Tommies, 5-1.
Wisconsin didn't look back after taking a quick lead, with Casse Hall and Lacey Eden each scoring multiple goals to lead UW to its third straight win.
The Badgers took the first lead when Laila Edwards, in a scrum behind the net, found Cassie Hall in front of the crease, scoring in the first nine minutes of the game.
Hall's goal was followed by back-to-back goals from Eden and Kelly Gorbatenko, giving the Badgers a commanding 3-0 lead in the first.
Eden's goal came from a quick takeaway by AdÄ—la Šapovalivová, who jarred a loose puck from a Tommie on the forecheck. Kirsten Simms collected the puck and fired it to Eden, who reached around the goalie with her backhand to net the highlight goal.
The second period began with a St. Thomas goal, and remained 3-1 for the rest of frame.
UW came back to its scoring ways when Hall made it 4-1 just two minutes into the third period. Her second goal of the game was assisted by Edwards and Gorbatenko.Â
St. Thomas had two power plays in the third period but were unable to score. From the second period on, Ava McNaughton faced 19 shots on goal, saving 18 of them.
The game was capped off when Eden scored an empty-net goal from Wisconsin's defensive zone to close out the game and secure Wisconsin's second straight 5-1 victory.
