Wisconsin defeats Purdue, 6-1, to remain undefeated at home
MADISON, Wis. - The Wisconsin men's tennis team impressed the home crowd at Nielsen Tennis Stadium Sunday afternoon, defeating Purdue 6-1. The Badgers earned the early 1-0 lead behind dominant performances at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. In singles play Wisconsin was propelled to victory behind wins at No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6
Sunday's doubles action was highlighted by a bagel from Ferdinand Kloesters and Michael Minasyan at No. 2 doubles. The duo improved to 6-0 this spring after defeating Purdue's Henrik Villanger and Nour Fathalla, 6-0. At No. 1 doubles Wisconsin's junior partnership of Oliver Olsson and Tomas Zlatohlavek earned a 6-3 victory, securing the Badgers' 1-0 lead. Olsson and Zlatohlavek are currently on a three-match win streak.
The Badgers held the momentum in singles play, with three straight set victories securing the team win. Sophomore Patrik Meszaros extended his win streak to five matches with a 6-2, 7-5 victory at No. 2 singles. His doubles partner, Matthew Fullerton, followed close behind at No. 6 singles, earning a 6-2, 6-3 over Purdue's Jacob Lee.
Sophomore Ferdinand Kloesters clinched Wisconsin's eighth win of the season at No. 4 singles. Kloesters earned his sixth win of the spring over Purdue's Juan David Velasquez. Minasyan earned a comeback win at No. 1 singles over No. 55 ranked Nour Fathalla. Edouard Aubert added the sixth point to the scoreboard with his thrilling 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) victory over Purdue's Stefan Simeunovic at No. 3 singles.
Wisconsin improves to 8-1 and 6-0 at home, with one non-conference match remaining.
Up Next: Wisconsin returns to Nielsen Tennis Stadium for its last non-conference match of the spring against Northern Illinois on Saturday, Feb. 21. First serve in Madison is scheduled for noon CT and admission is free for fans.
