Ben Wiegand breaks his own school record in the 100 breaststroke
MADISON, Wis. — The No. 24 Wisconsin men's swim and dive teams put together an impressive performance on day two of competition at the Big Ten championships at Soderholm Family Aquatic Center.
Senior Ben Wiegand's school record and freshman Enzo Solitario's bronze-medal finish highlighted the day, helping Wisconsin (349 pts) to hold steady in fourth place. No. 6 Indiana sits in first place with 535 points.
How it happened:
Wiegand set the tone in the preliminary session, finishing in 51.77 in the 100 breast to break his own school record. The time earned the senior a spot in the event's A final in the evening, where he placed seventh overall. Freshman Drew Gaerthofner followed shortly behind in eighth in 52.13.
In the 200 free, Solitario sealed a bronze-medal finish with a time of 1:32.12, marking a second-best all-time finish at UW. Luukas Vainio also earned a spot in the event's A final, collecting a sixth-place finish in 1:33.10. Wisconsin showed depth into the consolation finals, with Yoav Romano, Adam Graham and Miles Cratsenberg placing 14th, 17th and 24th, respectively.
Dominik Mark Torok added to the Badgers' success, collecting a fifth-place finish in the 400 IM in 3:38.53. Landon Kyser set the tone in the event's B final with a 14th-place finish overall in 3:43.45.
The Badgers wrapped up the evening with a sixth-place finish in the 200 free relay in 1:16.78 to earn an NCAA "B" qualifying time.
Competition resumes tomorrow with the 100 back, 200 breast, 500 free, 50 free and 3-meter diving. Prelims begin at 10 a.m. (CT) and finals at 5:30 p.m.
