Bollin and Howell second half surge not enough for Badgers
MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin women's basketball team (13-10, 5-7 B1G) fell 77-74 to the Indiana Hoosiers (13-11, 2-10 B1G) Wednesday night at the Kohl Center.Â
Kyrah Daniels led the Badgers with 15 points and eight rebounds. Destiny Howell contributed 15 points of her own with four rebounds. Shay Bollin matched her career-high 14 points, with nine coming from the perimeter.Â
How it happened:
The Badgers and Hoosiers traded buckets to start the game, setting the game's back-and-forth pace. In a first quarter that featured six lead changes, the Badgers chipped away at the basket to take a narrow 16-15 lead heading into the second. Wisconsin held steady defensively, forcing 11 turnovers in the first half and converting six points to help hold the game in close quarters. Â
Kyrah Daniels stood out in the first half, knocking down 13 of the Badgers' 30 points. The junior hit three consecutive jumpers to break up the Hoosiers' scoring spouts, and hit a clutch two-pointer at the buzzer to cut their lead down to one.Â
Indiana took charge to open the third quarter, hitting a 12-2 run that built on its first-half lead. Wisconsin started to gain momentum heading into the final seconds, cutting its deficit down to six as Destiny Howell intercepted an Indiana pass that fed Shay Bollin a key 3-pointer.
Wisconsin continued to work deep into the fourth quarter. Laci Steele knocked down a three-pointer to grab a two-point lead for the Badgers with three minutes remaining, but Indiana regained the lead and held on from there for a 77-74 final.Â
Wisconsin ended shooting 45.5% (30-66) from the field, 40.9% (9-22) from deep and 71.4% (5-7) from the free throw line. Indiana shot 55.8% (29-52) from the field, 30.0% (6-20) from three and 81.3% (13-16) from the line.Â
