Three Badgers finish in top-30
STATESBORO, Ga. – The Wisconsin men's golf team finished eighth at four-under at the Schenkel Invitational on Sunday at the Forest Heights Country Club in Stateboro, Georgia. UW beat seven teams, including Big Ten foes Indiana and Maryland. In tough course conditions, Wisconsin kept it clean all week with the field's second-most pars, and the least amount of double-bogeys.Â
Four Badgers landed in the top-half of the field, highlighted by Charles Erlandson and Spencer Turtz in 19th-place. The pair matched eachother all week long, with each player firing a 74 (+2) on Friday, a 72 (E) on Saturday and a 68 (-4) on Sunday. They both started the final round outside of the top-50, but rose 32 spots into the top-20 by the day's end. Erlandson, a redshirt sophomore, had a bogey-free affair on Sunday, highlighted by three front-nine birdies. Turtz started his day with a bogey, but caught fire on the front-nine, ripping off four-straight birdies, before going one-under on the back-nine.Â
Graduate Jacob Beckman finished 27th at even-par. He had just one bogey during his first-round 69 yesterday, and followed it up with a 70 (-2) on Saturday. He's now gone under-70 for twice this spring after doing so twice during the fall.
Sophomore Jason Shwartz came in 37th at +2, highlighted by a three-under 69 on Saturday. Making his first career start, redshirt freshman Drew Sacia rounded out the UW scoring on Sunday with a +3, 75. The Georgia native came in 67th, overall, in his home state.
Competing individually, Vijay Kumar placed 60th at three-over. He made an eagle on Hole 7 on Sunday to rise up the ranks.Â
From the Course
Head Coach Mike Wilson
"I'm incredibly encouraged by our performance this week, and am confident that we are right on the doorstep of true success. Spencer and Charlie's perseverance were excellent on Sunday, and I'm proud of Jacob and Jason for their strong starts to the week. I look forward to putting it altogether down in Arizona, and compete against some of the top team's in our conference."
Up Next: The Badgers are right back in action next week with a trip to Arizona for the "Pay It Forward" Collegiate, hosted by Minnesota. The two day event at the Wigwam Country Club in Peoria will tee off on Monday, March 23. UW will play 36-holes on Monday, before closing out the final-18 holes on Tuesday.Â
