UW erases four-run deficit in final frame to split doubleheader
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Wisconsin softball team split its doubleheader in San Diego to kick off their weekend, as they erupted for five runs in the final inning against host San Diego State to salvage a win on Thursday night after falling in 10 innings to No. 20/23 Grand Canyon.Â
The Badgers (14-7) plated five runs in the seventh inning for the seventh time in program history, manufacturing their largest comeback of the season behind four consecutive hits with two outs. Sophomore Kendra Lewis' double was the difference, as the lefty gave UW its first lead of the game to set up freshman Berritt Herr for her team-leading seventh win of the year.Â
From there, each offense went cold throughout the majority of the game. Senior Shelby Jacobson put together one of the strongest showings of her career, as the right-hander tossed a career-best 10 innings against the Lopes. Jacobson tallied 10 strikeouts in the process, as she was the last Badger arm to eclipse double-digit strikeouts back in 2025, where she had 11 versus Bowling Green. The Chicago native did not allow a hit until the fifth inning as well.Â
Grand Canyon tied it up with two outs in the seventh, barreling a triple to the gap to knot the game at one apiece. The Lopes' pitching staff stalled UW's offense in the bottom half of the frame—forcing extra innings in San Diego.Â
Wisconsin struggled to capitalize with runners in scoring position down the stretch, finishing the game with a 3-for-14 showing at the plate.Â
In the top of the 10th, GCU's Trinity Martin came around to score on a wild pitch to give the Lopes' their first lead of the game.Â
The Badgers had an opportunity late, but the bottom of the order could not convert, as Grand Canyon secured their second win over Wisconsin in as many weeks—remaining undefeated on the season.Â
Batting Cleanup:
SDSU's Jazmin Williams launched a triple to right field to break open the scoring in the fifth—driving in two to give the Aztecs the lead heading into the sixth.Â
The Badgers' offense threatened with two outs right away, as junior Hilary Blomberg and sophomore Kendra Lewis each racked up a single to put a pair of runners on for junior Alivia Bark. Aztecs' Key-annah Pu'a escaped the jam, retiring Bark to keep UW scoreless on the evening.Â
SDSU capitalized and tallied two more in the bottom half of the inning, hitting a two-run home run to double their advantage.Â
Wisconsin put together a rally late, as junior Makenzie Foster and redshirt freshman Jaclyn Showalter earned back-to-back RBI doubles to cut the deficit in half. Sophomore Hannah Conger turned the lineup over with a single, as senior Emily Bojan drove her in with her first triple of the season.Â
One batter later, Blomberg followed it up with an RBI single, as the team leader in RBI delivered in the clutch once again for the Badgers to tie the game at 4-4. Sophomore Kendra Lewis wasted no time—barreling a double to the gap to give the Badgers their first lead of the ballgame in what proved to be the game-winning hit.Â
Herr came on in the final frame and retired SDSU in order, as her seven wins are good for eighth in UW freshman history—tying Ashley Fauser (1996) and Paytn Monticelli (2023).Â
