Katie Nelson was named the Badgers' graduate assistant in June 2022.
“I am so excited to announce that Katie Nelson is staying in Madison as our graduate assistant,” said Head Coach Marisa Moseley. “After a stellar playing career where she was a consistent presence and leader on the court, Katie is transitioning onto the coaching staff as she begins her career. Her experience from both Boston and UW have prepared her to be an invaluable asset to not only our staff, but also our team. As Badger nation saw last year, her commitment to those around her and skill set driven by hard work will help to build the foundation we set in year one.”
Nelson competed for the Badgers during the 2021-22 season starting all 29 games. She led the Big Ten and ranked fifth nationally in minutes played per game while averaging 8.3 points, 3.9 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game. Nelson received UW’s Big Ten Sportsmanship award.
“I am beyond grateful to begin this new chapter of my life at UW-Madison and transition from student-athlete to the staff as a graduate assistant,” said Nelson. “I am thrilled to have played for Coach Moseley and to have received the opportunity to continue to learn from her and her coaching staff. Being a Badger this past season makes this transition even more special! I am excited to be a part of Wisconsin women’s basketball’s future success.”
Prior to Wisconsin, Nelson spent the first four years of her college career at Boston University. Nelson started all 103 games in her career and was named an All-Patriot league performer all four seasons. With career averages of 10.9 points, 3.7 assists and 3.4 rebounds, Nelson was top 10 in the country in minutes played per game all four years. She was also a three-time member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
A native of Falmouth, Massachusetts, Nelson finished her career at Bishop Feehan as its all-time leading scorer and guided the team to a state championship her junior season. She is currently pursuing a graduate degree in educational leadership and policy analysis with a concentration in athletic administration from UW and graduated from Boston University with a degree in business in 2021.
