Box Score
The University of Wisconsin women's soccer team traveled to South Bend, Ind. on Friday where they opened the 2009 season against third-ranked Notre Dame falling 3-0 at Alumni Field.
While the first half remained scoreless Notre Dame came out strong in the second. The Fighting Irish out-shot UW 20-8, but sophomore goalkeeper Michele Dalton (Mt. Prospect, Ill.) handled the pressure well as she had six saves in her debut performance. Dalton had three big first-half saves, two of which were kick saves on open shots. Kelsey Lysander had one save for Notre Dame.
Wisconsin's young team gained valuable experience against the top-ranked Fighting Irish to open the season. Four true freshmen, Alev Kelter (Eagle River, Alaska), Monica Lam-Feist (Surrey, British Columbia), Paige Adams (Port Coquitlam, British Columbia) and Lindsey Johnson (Sussex, Wis.) all made starts for the Badgers.
Kelter made a strong start as she had two of the eight shots attempted by the Badgers. Erin Jacobsen and Leigh Williams added a shot each while sophomore Laurie Nosbusch had four. Jacobsen was the only Badger to connect her shot on goal.
Notre Dame's Melissa Henderson made the first goal of the night in the 47th minute with an assist from Taylor Knaack. Rose Augustin then scored two minutes later from 25 yards out into the upper left corner. Junior Lauren Fowlkes made the last goal of the night in the 68th minute with an assist from Augustin.
The Badgers host UW-Milwaukee on Monday, Aug. 24 at the McClimon Soccer Complex at 7 p.m.
