Third-ranked Stanford proved too much for the Wisconsin women's soccer team, as the Badgers dropped a 6-0 decision in the final game of the Stanford Nike Invitational Sunday afternoon.

Despite Michele Dalton's season-high 12 saves the Badgers suffered their most lopsided loss of the year and fell to 4-4-1 on the season after dropping both games at Cagan Stadium in Stanford, Calif., over the weekend.

Five different Cardinal scored for Stanford, which extended its season-opening start to 9-0-0, and scored its fourth shutout of the season. Stanford won its own tournament, the 15th annual Stanford Nike Invitational, on goal-differential over Santa Clara. Stanford's total was plus-10, to Santa Clara's plus-two, after each went 2-0 in the event.

Stanford opened the first half with three goals and never looked back.

The Badgers held Stanford scoreless through the first 20 minutes before Christen Press opened the scoring for the Cardinal on a shot from the far post. Mariah Nogueria and Courtney Valeroo would add a goal apiece to put the Cardinal up 3-0 at the half.

In the second half, the Cardinal fired off three goals within three minutes. Lindsay Taylor scored at 50:03 on a penalty kick before Kelley O'Hara drove in a goal at 52:19. Mariah Nogueira topped off the scoring for Stanford at 53:03 off of a corner kick for her second goal of the game.

Stanford outshot the Badgers, 30-4, but the Badgers were unable to connect any shots on net. Freshman Monica Lam-Feist led UW with two shots. Stanford also held the advantage in corner kicks with 10 to the Badgers' two.

Wisconsin returns home on Friday, Sept. 25, to open the Big Ten Conference season. The women's team hosts No. 11 Purdue at 5 p.m. as part of the Pac the Mac doubleheader at the McClimon Complex. The men's soccer team will kick off at 7:30 p.m. against No. 8 Indiana.
