MADISON, Wis. - Led by four players in double-digit kills, the Wisconsin volleyball team edged Oregon State on its home court at the Active Ankle Challenge. The Badgers won 19-25, 25-19, 19-25, 25-23, 15-13 to even their season record at 3-3.
'"That was a great win for our team,'" said UW coach Pete Waite. '"That was the best we''ve seen our entire team play. It was great balance and great improvement from match to match."
'"Across the board, we had a number of great performances. (Janelle Gabrielsen) did a great job running the offense. Our serve receive was very solid. Our service was the strongest it ha's been all season. It was a great win over Oregon State."'
Senior Brittney Dolgner put down 22 kills and added 13 digs to lead the UW. Sophomore Elle Ohlander tied her career best with 13 kills while senior Caity DuPont added 11 kills. Freshman Alexis Mitchell chipped in a career-high 10 kills as Wisconsin edged Oregon State 65 to 61 in kills. The Beavers hit .283 for the match while the Badgers connected on .253 percent of their attempts.
OSU (4-2) was led by Jill Sawatzky, who had a match-high 26 kills, and Rachel Rourke, who added 18 kills.
Gabrielsen put up a career-best 56 assists and added nine digs, two kills and one block.
The Badgers out-dug the Beavers 54 to 48, led by Dolgner and Kim Kuzma, who also had 13 digs. OSU's Alyssa O'Neil led all players with 15 digs.
UW was outblocked 13 to 6 with Ohlander leading the Badgers with five stuffs.
DuPont led the team with two of Wisconsin's four service aces. Oregon State tallied seven service aces.
'"After our match this morning, we watched video of that match with a number of different position players and just showed them some areas which they can improve their game,"' said Waite. "'It wasn''t so much about Oregon State, it was about us. They truly took it to heart and made some changes and it showed up in the match."'
After splitting the first two sets, the Badgers trailed 17-11 in the fourth set. Mitchell had two kills as UW went on a 7-1 run to tie the set at 18. The score was tied again at 19, 20 and 22 before an Ohlander kill and an Oregon State hitting error gave Wisconsin its first set point. The Beavers held off one set point but a DuPont kill forced the fifth set.
The Badgers trailed 5-3 in the fifth set but a Dolgner kill and block by Mitchell knotted the set at five. Mitchell had another kill to put the UW up 8-6. Oregon State pulled within one point several times, including at 13-12 but a Beaver service error allowed Wisconsin to serve for match point. Following a net serve by the Badgers, DuPont hit a cross-court shot that won the match for UW.
UW finishes 2-1 in the tournament, which wraps up on Monday when Oregon State hosts CSU Fullerton.
The Badgers return to action next weekend at the Notre Dame Invitational, taking on Notre Dame on Friday night and New Mexico State on Saturday.
