MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened their three-meet road stand with a Big Ten match at Iowa Friday night. The women swept all their events en route to a 208-92 win over the Hawkeyes, while the men fell, 192-102.

The Badgers made it a tough competition from the beginning.

The women won the 200-yard medley relay by four seconds (1:40.76), while the men came in second by almost a third of a second, coming in at 1:31.68.

Staying on the women's side, three winners clocked in with NCAA 'B' qualifying times for the second consecutive meet.

Junior Ashley Wanland finished the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:01.77, while junior Beckie Thompson won the 50-yard freestyle in 23.02 and senior Maggie Meyer clocked in times for the 100-yard (53.86) and 200-yard backstrokes (1:57.30).

Danielle Beckwith was one of several Badgers to win multiple events as the junior won both the 500-yard freestyle (4:57.61) and the 1000-yard freestyle (10:00.96).

Another multiple-event winner was freshman Rebecka Palm, who followed her strong debut last week with a win in the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.67) and the 100-yard butterfly (55.45) against the Hawkeyes.

Wisconsin came out with wins on the men's side as well.

Defending Big Ten Swimmer of the Week Daniel Lester won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 47.86, which is the fastest time for the event this season for the team. He also won the 200-yard butterfly and the 200-yard Individual Medley.

Lester’s wins in the fly events both registered as ‘B’ qualifying times.

Meanwhile, the defending Big Ten Diver of the Week, Michael Ross, swept the diving competition, winning on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards.

There were many close races in the men's events, as well. All of the swimmers in the 200-yard freestyle finished within six seconds of each other, with sophomore Michael Weiss finishing in third, the highest place for the Badgers.

Sophomore Sam Rowan and freshmen Matt Pircon and Dirk Lambrechts finished in third through fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke, a race that those competitors finished within three seconds of each other.

The freestyle events were especially close with the 50-yard freestyle ending within two seconds and the 100-yard freestyle ending in four seconds. Junior Wes Lagerhausen finished second and fourth, respectively, in those events.

After a week off, the Badgers travel to Minnesota for another Big Ten Conference dual meet. They return to the Natatorium to host Northwestern on Nov. 11.
