MADISON, Wis. -- If the second half of the Big Ten Conference season is a good as tonight's match, then things are looking up for the Wisconsin volleyball team.

The Badgers (14-8 overall, 3-8 Big Ten) opened the second half of the Big Ten season with a 30-28, 25-20, 25-16 win over Michigan State in the UW Field House on Friday night. The win moves Wisconsin up a spot in the conference standings, tying for ninth place with the Spartans (11-11, 3-8).
Reigning Big Ten Player of the Week Allison Wack had another big match for Wisconsin, leading all teams with 14 kills and three service aces. The senior also added seven digs and two blocks on the night.
Alexis Mitchell finished close behind Wack with 10 total kills and a match-high three blocks. Mitchell hit an impressive .600 (10-1-15) to lead all players. Six other Badgers contributed to the team's 48 total kills, including eight from sophomore Bailey Reshel who started on the left side.
Janelle Gabrielsen led both teams with 41 assists and Kim Kuzma finished with a team-high 20 digs. Kuzma's dig total for the night moved her up to third place in Wisconsin's all-time digs leader board.
Jenilee Rathje led Michigan State with 10 kills while Becca Zlabis and Kyndra Abron added eight and seven putaways, respectively.
MSU's Allyson Karaba made 21 digs on the night for a match-high. Alexis Mathews finished the night with a team-high two blocks and Natalie Emro finished with 21 assists for the Spartans.
The Badgers out-attacked the Spartans 48-40 and finished with a .275 hitting percentage in comparison to MSU's .172. UW edged out Michigan State with 44-40 assists and outblocked the team seven to three. MSU finished on top with 52 digs while Wisconsin made 49 on the night. The Badgers also finished with six service aces in the win.
Wisconsin came out strong against Michigan State, taking a 5-0 lead and upping that to 12-5. The Badgers controlled the set until Michigan State was able to get back in the game, going on an 8-2 run to tie the set at 22.
The two teams battled back and forth with seven ties late in the period. Wisconsin held off two set points by Michigan State and UW also served for set point twice. Wack had three kills late in the period to put the Badgers up 28-27. A kill from Reshel and a block by Mitchell gave Wisconsin the set 30-28.
Wack led both teams with seven kills in the first set while Mitchell finished with two blocks.
The Badgers found themselves down early in the second set trailing 15-9. Despite the deficit, Wisconsin used two 5-0 runs to close the gap and take the lead. With their first run, the Badgers closed the gap to 15-14. MSU led 18-16 before another 5-0 run put UW up 21-18. UW used the momentum to take the 25-20 win, outscoring Michigan State 16-5 in the last part of the set.
Mitchell, Wack and Reshel tied for the set-high kills with four.
The Badgers came out strong in the third set, making an early 4-0 run to take a 9-4 lead. Wack led the run with a kill and two service aces. Wisconsin led 16-11 when Wack once again led a 4-0 run for the Badgers with a kill and a block, giving the Badgers a 20-11 lead. Elle Ohlander sealed the sweep with a kill, giving the Badgers a 25-16 set win.
The Badgers continue their homestand tomorrow night as they look to upset No. 15 Michigan. First serve is at 7 p.m. in the UW Field House.
