MADISON, Wis. - Despite winning nine events, the Wisconsin women's swimming and diving team fell to the Minnesota Golden Gophers in a dual meet Friday night at the University Aquatic Center in Minneapolis, Minn. The Badgers fell by a score of 152.5-146.5.

The Badgers made it a true competition from the beginning.

In the 200-yard medley relay, the team of Maggie Meyer, Ashley Wanland, Rebecka Palm, and Beckie Thompson won with a time of 1:40.14, their best time together as a relay team this season.

Palm followed that win with two of her own, in the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.94) and the 100-yard butterfly (54.68). Both times are personal bests for the freshman.

Palm also swam in the winning 400-yard freestyle relay, an event that resulted in two NCAA 'B' qualifying times for the Badgers. Palm, Laura Miller, Maddy Dalcamo, and Thompson finished with a time of 3:23.18, while the 'B' relay team of Ruby Martin, Danielle Beckwith, Patricia Nelson, and Meyer finished right behind them at 3:23.58.

Meyer and Thompson combined made up four of the Badgers' eight wins and nine qualifying times. Meyer won the 100-yard (53.69) and 200-yard (1:57.04) backstrokes, while Thompson won the 50-yard (22.79) and 100-yard (50.20) freestyles. This is Thompson's first NCAA 'B' qualifying time in the 100-yard freestyle this season.

The Badgers kept it close throughout the meet.

Wanland finished a close second in both the 100-yard (1:01.64) and 200-yard (2:12.76) breaststroke events. Both of her times are NCAA 'B' qualifying times and season-bests.

Beckwith also clocked in two season-best times in the 500-yard (4:52.95) and 1000-yard (9:56.82) freestyle events, finishing third and second, respectively.

On the diving side, sophomore Roxanne Fitter won on the 3-meter board and placed second on the 1 meter board. She finished the 3-meter with a score of 272.02, 10 points ahead of freshman Maggie Keefer, a former Big Ten Diver of the Week.

Wisconsin falls to 2-1 on the season, next competing in a dual meet against Arizona on Nov. 5 and 6, while the divers head to Los Angeles for the (USC) Trojan Diving Invitational.

The Badgers return home on Nov. 11 for a dual meet against Big Ten rival Northwestern.
