MADISON, Wis. -- For the record, Jon Leuer has posted two double-doubles in his career at Wisconsin.
If the past week is any indication, expect that number to climb in 2010-11.
The preseason All-Big Ten pick's latest performance was part of a dominant effort that combined 25 points and 11 rebounds Wednesday to key a 93-59 win for the Badgers over Minnesota State in their exhibition finale.
Fast Facts | Leuer and Taylor combine for 45 points, 13 rebounds | Badgers shoot 58.5% from the floor | A total of 13 players scored for the Badgers | |
Leuer's game-high point total came on 11-for-16 shooting from the field, and in just 25 minutes of action. It followed his 15-point, 10-rebound performance against UW-La Crosse last Saturday.
"He had a lot of different types of moves, he did about everything he could have offensively," UW head coach Bo Ryan said of Leuer. "He hit from outside, inside, got to the free throw line. He looked pretty good."
Junior guard Jordan Taylor added 20 points on 7-for-9 shooting for the Badgers while also dishing out five assists without a turnover.
In all, the Badgers' three returning starters from 2009-10 combined to score 53 points. It was part of an offensive performance that saw UW connect on 58.5 percent of its shots from the floor, including a 65-percent mark in the first half.
Senior forward Keaton Nankivil had eight points in just 18 minutes of action, while sophomore Mike Bruesewitz added nine - including a 6-for-6 performance at the free-throw line - and senior guard Wquinton Smith had six points to go along with five assists to round out the production by the Badgers' starting five.
The Badgers were dominant inside, outscoring the Mavericks in the paint, 40-14. UW also converted the Mavericks' 20 turnovers into 29 points and turned the ball over themselves just 11 times.
Hot shooting staked the Badgers to a 50-23 lead at halftime, with 33 of those first-half points coming from Leuer and Taylor.
Minnesota State's Marcus Hill knocked down a 3-pointer to cut the Badgers' lead to 7-4 just over 2 1/2 minutes into the game, but that was as close as the Mavericks would get the rest of the way.
Beginning with seven straight points from Leuer, the Badgers answered with a 43-16 run over the next 17 minutes and opened a 30-point before another Mavericks trey just before halftime.
Minnesota State only had 18 field-goal attempts over the first 20 minutes and converted just five of them, a 27-percent clip.
For the game, the Mavericks shot 33 percent from the field.
Wisconsin stretched its lead to as much as 40 on five occasions in the second half.
The Badgers now turn their attention to Sunday's season-opener, with Prairie View A&M coming to the Kohl Center for a 5 p.m. tipoff. The game will air live on the Badger Radio Network and will be streamed on ESPN3.com.
"You never question whether you are ready," Ryan said. "It's just how well they'll perform.
"Conditioning-wise they have done everything. They are in the position where if they keep making the effort to improve, then we will continue to become a better team."
Wednesday's game will be re-aired on Big Ten Network at 3 p.m. (CT) Thursday.
