TEMPE, Ariz. -- The University of Wisconsin softball team opened its 2010 season with a 5-2 loss to Texas Tech at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz., on Thursday night. Junior Ashley Hanewich hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning to drive in both Wisconsin runs.
Texas Tech jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning thanks to a leadoff homerun from Mikey Kenney and a two-run single from Logan Hall.
Ashly Jacobs was strong for Texas Tech striking out eight of the first 13 batters, but the Badgers broke through in the fifth inning.
Freshman Kendall Grimm started a two-out rally after being hit by a pitch. Hanewich followed, and on a full count, crushed a home run to right field. It was the third homerun of her career and it cut the Texas Tech lead to 3-2.
A pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning extended the Red Raider lead to 5-2, but the Badgers had a chance in the final frame.
Freshman Molly Spence led things off with a single and senior Letty Olivarez followed with a walk against Texas Tech relief pitcher Ashley Brokeshoulder. After a pair of strikeouts, freshman Maggie Strange was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Senior Katie Soderberg was up next and worked the count to 3-2 before popping out to the shortstop.
The Badgers are back in action Friday with two games. Wisconsin faces Texas A&M at 10 a.m. (CT) and then face California at 3 p.m. (CT).
