MADISON, Wis. – The No. 11 Wisconsin men’s rowing team concluded racing at the Stanford Invitational on Sunday when the Badger varsity eight and second varsity eight boats defeated No. 12 Stanford.
The varsity eight boat, including coxswain Anthony Altimari, Tim Aghai, Roger Huffman, Matt Lojkovic, Max Goff, Luke Juckett, Steve Dudek, Daniel Gengler and Sam Hoidal, defeated Stanford by 3.4 seconds.
“In the varsity [eight race], Stanford really went after it and had us on the line, as we expected they would. It was very hard fought. They had a bobble, I’m not sure exactly what happened, but that was it; we took that opening and we were gone,” head coach Chris Clark said.
Meanwhile, the second varsity eight, seating coxswain Matt Francsis, Michael Kaufman, Zach Rodenbough, Paul Williams, James Hadar, Jack Yeksigian, Andrew Gallagher, Ryan Thompson and Eric Duhon, pulled ahead for a 15.1-second victory over the Cardinal.
“These are difficult—these weekends like this,” Clark stated, referencing the cramped racing schedule of the Stanford Invitational. “After traveling 2,000 miles and having three races in 24 hours…it’s not easy to do. It’s really a testament to the toughness and ability of these guys. They were able to shrug it off like it didn’t affect them much and to perform well.”
In Saturday’s competition, Wisconsin faced No. 2 Cal Saturday morning and No. 18 Oregon State in the afternoon.
UW went 2-1 against Oregon State, with the varsity eight boat winning by 21.1 seconds, and the second varsity eight gained a 7.3 second edge for the win.
Against Cal in the morning races, the Wisconsin men’s varsity finished just 2.8 seconds behind the Bears, while the second varsity eight trailed by only 4.6 seconds.
“In the races against Cal, we knew that they would go high and hard,” Clark reported following Saturday’s first varsity eight race. “They tried to break us, but they didn’t do it. We managed to stick with them, and we were pleased with the competitiveness of the race. It was a good start and a decent time.
“Now we’ll give them a little bit of rest and then it’s back to the grinding stone,” Clark concluded.
The Badgers will return to training on the open water in Madison, Wis., until the first weekend in May, when they will head east to compete in the Cochrane Cup on May 1 and the Jablonic Cup on May 2.
