"That's what we're real curious about - how will these young players respond to a team that comes out in their home environment and they're all fired up about it," said UW coach Pete Waite of tonight's match. "The second set, we came back and did well and in the third set we did well but then we faltered a little bit in the fourth and Milwaukee got hot again.
"We came from behind at the end of that set, which says a lot. They didn't lay down and they didn't wait to go the fifth, which always gets scary on the road. It was a good environment for these kids to learn from."
Sophomore Alexis Mitchell tied her career best with 15 kills and also led the UW with a career-high hitting percentage of .667 (15-1-21). Freshman Dominique Thompson and Elise Walch both added 10 kills to the Badger offense.
"Alexis Mitchell really stepped up and really saved us throughout the whole match," said Waite.
Wisconsin struggled as a team, hitting just .190, its second-lowest hitting percentage of the season, while Milwaukee (2-6) hit .219, the highest for a UW opponent this year.
The Badgers tallied 55 kills while the Panthers put down 50 kills led by 17 from Elizabeth Egerer and 15 from Mary Beth O'Brien.
UW won the match from the service line where it had nine aces, including a career-high four from Janelle Gabrielsen and season-high three from Kim Kuzma. The Badgers were aced five times by the Panthers and UW had only six service errors.
After a slow start, the Badgers ended up outblocking the Panther 9-8. Wisconsin was led by five blocks from Thompson while Gabrielsen added three stuffs.
Milwaukee finished with 57 digs, including a match-high 21 from Morgan Potter, while Wisconsin had 48 digs. Kuzma tallied 18 digs while Gabrielsen added 11 digs.
Wisconsin continues play at the tournament on Saturday, taking on Central Michigan (4-3) at 11 a.m. at the Al McGuire Center and Toledo (5-2) at 5:30 p.m. at the Klotsche Center.
