KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Wisconsin women's soccer team (2-3-2) tallied its second win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Tennessee (2-5-0) on Friday.
Fast Facts | • Nosbusch notched her second goal of the season | • Sessions tallied the assist and her first career points | • Dalton collected eight saves for the Badgers | |
Although the Lady Volunteers outshot the Badgers 9-7 in the first half, it was the Cardinal and White who took the lead in the first 45 minutes of play.
The Badgers slated their third goal of the season in the 34th minute when freshman Catie Sessions (Woodbury, Minn) served the ball from the right side of the field to junior co-captain Laurie Nosbusch (Mequon, Wis.). Nosbusch headed the ball past Tennessee's goalkeeper to record her second goal of the season. The play also marked Sessions' first assist and point as a Badger.
"It was great timing and a great serve," Wisconsin head coach Paula Wilkins said of Sessions' assist. "Nosbusch made a great effort to get in front of the Tennessee defense and get a head on the ball.
"I think Catie Sessions was better and better as the game went on, and it was great to see them put together a great play and a great goal."
Despite trailing in shots 12-20, the Badgers tallied their third straight shutout of the season. Wisconsin goalkeeper Michele Dalton (Mt. Prospect, Ill.) notched her second consecutive shutout with eight saves in 90 minutes of play. The senior is now 2-2-1 overall for the Cardinal and White.
"Michele had two great saves in the second half to maintain the shutout," Wilkins said. "Both teams were resilient. Tennessee had some great looks on goal, and they put forth a great effort."
Tennessee goalkeeper recorded five saves for the Lady Volunteers and is now 2-5-0 overall.
Both teams were equally aggressive throughout the non-conference contest with Wisconsin and Tennessee tallied 18 and 20 fouls, respectively.
Wisconsin concludes the weekend in Nashville on Sunday. The Badgers take on Vanderbilt for just the second time in school history.
The last time the two faced was when the Badgers opened the 2007 season at Vanderbilt and after 110 minutes of play, the game resulted in a 0-0 draw.
